To open bar, or not to open bar...that is the question...

To open bar, or not to open bar...that is the question...

Ok, so FH and I booked out 'afterparty' last night at the hotel where we are having our wedding.
We are getting married in LB, and since we live here and have alot of 'friends' that are not invited to the actual wedding, we opened up the after party for anyone who wants to come down.
We are hiring a singer for afterwards (someone who we all love that plays at teh bars down here) from 11-2. So here is the question;

Do we have to pay the bar tab for the after party, or can we have cash bar? We already have to pay $1000 for the room and bartender cost, and the cost of the entertainment... Thoughts??

I don’t think you have to pick up the tab-cash bar is fine

IMO - I would...I know its an extra cost, but if I were invited to an after party, I would assume the party is continuing. However, I wouldn't have a problem paying for my own drinks.

any after party i have ever gone to has been a cash bar, ours will be as well.

It's a nice gesture but I don't think anyone is expecting you to pick up the tab.

We are also having an afterparty that we paid a few hundred $s for the use of the restaurant/bar til whenever we wanted (its next to our hotel). Since we are paying for the RH and paid to keep a bar/retaurant open for an afterparty exclusively for our party, we are not having an open bar. Plus - we figured that it will be 12:30am by the time it starts and everyone will be tipsy already from the wedding lol

I think that you are providing enough honestly but would you be able to work out some sort of deal - like an hourly open bar rate & maybe you could cover the 1st hour? Picking up a tab at the end of the night if you're paying drink by drink is DANGEROUS!

I wouldnt. It could end up costing you a fortune.

I'm not. We're paying to keep the hotel bar open late after, but we're not paying for the alcohol.

Nope, i'd def. do a cash bar in that scenario!

I would make sure that the people coming who aren't invited to your wedding know that it's a cash bar so that there are no issues.

Maybe you can open a tab and then at the end of the night pay for it, instead of agreeing a certain price per person?

Thanks girls! we were also considering maybe throwing like $1000 behind the bar, then when that runs out, have everyone pay for their own, but then figured that might add to the confusion if people get like 2 drinks for free, then have to pay for the next round.
