To the BTDT moms...

When you had your first baby, what was the financial impact like? I'm not talking about whether you both work or if you are a SAHM - don't want to add fuel to that fire again - but what I mean is, did it shock you all the diapers and formula and all the other little things you had to get? Did you get a lot you needed at your shower?

I got alot from my shower. I think I figured on the diapers & formulas. You just learn how to get the great bargains. It all can be done!

I always buy diapers with a coupon. I pump so formula was only an issue for the first 4 weeks while I was fixing my supply- but trying to get my breastfeeding on track cost us nearly $700 plus the $200 for my Pump In Style. I have still saved money though since I have been pumping for so long. I knew the prices of these items before I had Molly so I didn't have sticker shock, but DH did.

I'm not a BTDT mom yet but from what people tell me the financial part doesn't hit you as hard because you're going to be forced to cut back on other things-like going out. You'll rent more movies instead of going to the movies. And you'll probably have a lot more dinners at home rather than going out to eat. So while you are spending more money at the grocery store each week you'll be spending a lot less in your entertainment part of your budget.

This is very true! I haven't noticed a huge impact to be completely honest. For the most part people do buy most everything you need for the first three months (give or take a little.) I am BF, so I cut out a huge cost in feeding. The only thing I bought was breastpads at 6 dollars every couple weeks and my 125 dollar breastpump. Diapers/wipes, I never buy unless they are on sale and I have a coupon. If not, I stick to LUVS because IMHO they are just as good and usually cheaper than the Pampers. Clothes that's a little difficult when you have a girl and an obsession with hats! I also shop the clearance/sale racks though.
