to the ladies who are keeping their names....

to the ladies who are keeping their names....

how did u convince your FH?

we both feel very strongly about our names, so its a hard decision. he wants me to take his name and i want to keep mine. neither of us like the option to hyphenate or for me to use my maiden name as a middle name and take his last name. also, i can not take his name legally and use my maiden name at work (you cant do that in the medical field because of prescription writing and signing charts)

i really want to keep my name, but i need my FH to support this. i have already expressed my reasons, but i want to see if there are other viewpoints out there.

What has worked for you?

I didn't convince him. It was my choice and he was fine with it. I think he'd be happier if I took his, but ultimately he respects my decision. I may choose to change it once we have kids, but I just wasnt ready for it yet.

I responded to your last post about this- I fortunately did not have to convince him either... but what are his reasons for wanting you to change?

Re: to the ladies who are keeping their names....

i just told him that my last name means as much to me as much as his does to him...

and also, he fell in luv with me as the name I have now -- why would it make a difference if i change it or not? if not changing my last name will turn him off -- then he's totally not the person i would want to marry.

in the beginning he was not too happy about it, but my reasoning was right. then he rambled about his dad not liking it and i was like 'i'm sorry, but i'm not marrying your father..' hahaha JMHO :) SO just as long when we have kids FH agree that we'll have the children with his last name or hyphenated with mine. HTH!

Same here. I understand that you can't change your name 'legally' because of your profession, however, you can retain your name 'legally' and be known socially by your husband's last name.

You have the legal right to use any name as long as you are not intending to defraud anyone.

it's funny, my husband really wanted me to use my own name. We are both older, and work in a business where women usually keep their names...but still sometimes I wish I had his name.

i want to keep my name and the way i am getting to do it is, at least for a few years is because our accountant said if we file married it will seriously lower our tax returns. so, if i can't change my name on my social security card than i certainly cannot change it for work.
therefore i technically can't change my name- i was so disappointed (i love my accountant!)
