Today is the hearing in PA on whether to charge the Mepham players as adults

What do you all think of this?

I have been following the story and I strongly believe that the judge should have the kids tried as adults. What an awful message it would send to kids throughout the country to know that there would be minimal punishment for such terrible crimes. It makes me so sad to read the coverage of the story and then watch my DH's football team and try to imagine something like that happening.

I also think the coaches should have quit immediately. Nice message to send - I was in charge, but its not MY fault. It happened on their watch. There is no excuse for not noticing freshman players huddling together in a recreational room at night because they are too afraid to go to their beds

Yes I agree. I think they should be tried as adults too. I think they knew what they were doing was wrong, morally and legally, yet they thought they could get away with it.

I also think the coaches should resign.

I think they should be charged as adults also, they knew exactly what they were doing

adults....not only were most over 16...they were senior members of the team...therefore had some sort of responsibility....

hazing is a HUGE problem in schools...but it is SO hard to catch...this would be a great example maker...

i agree, they knew what they were doing and knew it was wrong. probation or a youth home is just not enough punishment for this type of crime imo.

The youngest of the 3 took a plea bargain to not be tried as an adult to testify against the other 2. The kids it happened to have to tell the judge everything that happened then be crossed examined. Can you imagine? Those kids have been through so much already.

i think they should be charged as adults. they are 16 and 17 years old, they are old enough to know what they were doig was wrong.

I agree that they should be charged as adults. What a precedent this would set & hopefully stop something this disgusting from happening again!

Without a doubt, charged as adults. I wonder if the judge who is hearing the case will accept the boys plea bargain. The trial starts at 1 today, right?

the kid is smart to plea bargain...at least his record will be sealed and gone at 21...

hopefully his testimony will stick it to the other 2...

2 out of 3 is good in my eyes...

They should absolutely be tried as adults!!! This wasn't an accident, or just a little rough-housing, this was an intentional, brutal crime! I'm curious, does the judge HAVE to accept the plea bargain? Or can he reject it and force the kid to stand trial?

Yes, the judge has to approve the plea bargain. Usually, they do and it is rubber stamped, but I have seen a judge through out a plea bargain and send a guy to jail - and that was for a driving offense

Well then I hope this judge does the same thing. These boys don't deserve the privilege of a clean record after they turn 21. They boys who suffered will have to carry this around forever, why shouldn't the ones who did it as well?

I think they should be tried as adults. The crime was sick. Can you imagine how these young victims must have felt like telling their parents what happened?

Sick and twisted and they need to be tried as adults.

I totally agree with you, but if there is a chance that if the 3rd kid can testify and cement the conviction of the other 2...its worth it
