Hospital opens drop box for unwanted babies

what is wrong with this world? why are we allowing such a 'baby box' to even exist? on the other hand, is it comforting knowing that if an unwanted baby does get abandoned that it be left in the hands of a hospital instead of some alley or a trash can?

your thoughts please?

Sorry - but my thought is that this should be on the non-wedding related board.

NWR isn't what it seems---its more of a board for the avid posters of NWR, (lurk over there and you'll see) so i think this topic is fine right here.

I think that while it's sad that a baby drop box is needed, I say good for them for having one. They did this in a town in Italy, and people have used it. I would much rather a mother just drop the baby in the box (which usually includes a crib that the baby is laid in), than throwing it out in the garbage and pretending it doesn't exist. At least this way, the innocent child has an ability to have a life with ppl who will adopt them and love them.

I completely agree. When I was doing my OB/GYN rotation at Brookdale Hospital in Bklyn, I was amazed at how many young (under 18) girls were giving birth and obviously not wanting thier babies. It was awful to watch them reject their newborns. Oftentimes, I wished I could just suggest giving their babies up for adoption....

i agree-- so sad but at the same time-- the other alternative, usually, is the baby ending up dead in a garbage can

What would you rather them do? Drop the baby in a trash can? Force the mother to take care of a baby she obviously doesn't want or can't take care of for some reason? Any mother who would drop a baby off like that obviously has very good reasons that she doesn't want to go through normal adoption channels. The sad truth is a lot of people live in intolerable situations that you or I can't imagine. Maybe this is a incredible sacrifice on the mother's part to ensure a good life for her child. You don't know. It's an awful situation--the only good that can come out of it is a baby who is adopted by a loving family, and if this is the way to do it, then I'm all for it.

It is crazy that we have to have something like that, but with the world being the way that it is...I am glad there is somewhere for these babies to go.

I agree totally while it's sad that we have to have these I'm happy knowing that they are available. I knew a woman who had dropped her baby off at the hospital, but she felt she had no other choice, she was stuck in the middle of a horrific abusive relationship and was afraid that the baby would suffer in one way or another.
I would rather hear a story on the news about how many babies have been left there and are now leading happy normal lives because they were adopted by a loving family then hear about one being abandoned

i agree with the drop box. Frankly i hate thinking of the mothers that do, do this but it is a sad fact in this world that still remains true. The box it a better way and a safer way for the baby to have a second chance at life. Look at the stories you heard about in the news babies found in garbage bags, outside in the middle of winter at churchs, girls having babies in the bathrooms and then discarding them in a very disturbing way. Until this world chances the drop box is the best thing that has come close to an answer no matter how upsetting the subject is.

The problem with things like this is people try to change the way the world is, when it can't be done. Unfortunately, the reality of today is something like this IS needed to save the lives of children. They should make it easier for these children to live, not difficult for mothers to have a way out. Granted, young women who aren't ready for a baby shouldn't be having sex, but it's a reality and this is the best alternative right now to them shoving their unwanted babies in garbage bags. I'm all for it.

The only new part about this story is that now there's an actual place to put the baby instead of the doorstep. There have been foundling stories for millenia.
