Too late?

Too late?

Okay, I am having my engagement party on Saturday, June 21st under a big white tent on my sister's deck. I want to have it start at 8:00PM, but my family (really, my Mom) feels that this is too late, she feels 6PM or 7PM is more appropriate. We will be serving food buffet style and will have a full menu grilled filet mignon etc. I am going to have the tent lit up with white lights and candles and want more of a cocktail party, adult atmosphere. There will be guests of all ages there, but no children. Friends my age, older cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmother etc. Question is: do you think 8PM is too late? I could alter the menu to suit the time.

Hey thats my wedding day. I think 8pm is fine, maybe 7:30 to appease your mom. Your party sounds wonderful

IMO it's just a little late. I would probably make it one hour earlier. I don't think that you should change the menu though.

7pm would probably be better. People will be really hungry and cranky by 8pm.GMO

If you're gonna alter the time, do so by 1/2 hr. (730), but don't alter the menu

I would push it back to 7pm, but definitely don't change the menu.

Would choose a 7pm start time, no change in menu

8 is not too late but it will go by so much faster. Mine started at 6:00 and the last guests did not leave until 4:30 am... My FH passed out before the guests left,, but I had the BEST TIME!

OOH Evenedan, filet mignon, not too shabby I think starting it at 7pm is fine but that's your call.

I disagree with everyone else. I would make your invitations for 6:30PM, since people tend to lollygag and straggle into a party (especially during the summer).
You're not going to put the food out as soon as people get there...you want people to mingle, have a drink, relax a bit before your herd them over to the buffet.
I say start earlier and allow your guests to enjoy themselves all night.

I would go with 7, most people wont show up until about 7:30-maybe even a little later. 8 is not too late, but some guests may be tired and leave around 10-10:30 which would make for a short engagement party.

I see that I need to make it earlier I just had this image of it being an elegant night affair with white globes hanging from the tent and floating candles in the pool. It is the longest day of the year so I wanted it to start when it was almost dark out, it would have been pretty to arrive and see the evening ambiance. Oh well, I hear ya, I will probably make it for 7PM. Thanks for all your input.

You can still do that we had a backyard party and we had huge pink floating candles in the pool and pond.. Tikki torches surrounding the entire yard, and loads of candles on every table, along with the white piping lights all along the deck, The back yard was gorgeous! Your ideas sound wonderful!

I had my E-Party at 8 pm and had Ziti chicken Parm and lots of other foods no one complained. In my opionion when people go out to dinner they usually go out at around 8 anyway!
