A friend of mine and my FH brought up an interesting question, I thought I would address to those who have already had their weddings or have been to one where this has happened. Has anyone had an issue with a wedding guest getting very drunk? Has the valet given them their keys? Has anyone thought about shutting the alcohol flow down about an hr before the end of the recption. One can always hope that your guests will have enough class to not get completely drunk, but there are always a few people. One of the things I like about East Wind is that guests have the option of staying the night if need be. We were wondering if valets will return the keys to obviously drunk guests?

I went to a wedding where the Best Man got too drunk. The valet did not give him his keys and handed the issue over to family members and they dealt with getting him home.

Re: Too much drinking...
My sis got married at the East Wind last Feb. We had an incident w/an OOT guest that got belligerently drunk! The valet guy stopped him from taking the shuttle van! I can only assume that any catering hall would be held responsible for a guest if they were to drive drunk and God forbid, hurt themselves or someone else. Bars, and bartenders are, right?
About shutting down the alcohol and hour before the end of the reception. I personally don't think that is a good idea. What about the guest's that have paced themselves?

Personally, not too many on my side drink, but his drinks...I have never, nor has FH ever, witnessed any of them pacing themselves.
My friend, who is also getting married, is having this concern as well. She has a few friends that she is concerned about.
I feel better knowing at least the valet will deny returning car keys

I'm considering this...My cousin did this at her wedding many years ago.

That is a great question and honestly I never thought about it... Looking back there were a few guests who were very drunk at the wedding. But they were all with dates who werent tanked. So I would imagine that their dates were the ones who drove home. It doesnt hurt to ask your banquet hall what their policy is on that.

Re: Too much drinking...
This is a concern of mine because we have some BIG drinkers coming to our wedding. I have no idea how to control it. I'm hoping that my FMIL will attempt to control her family and we'll try to controll our friends...

I am getting wedding insurance and it covers stuff like this...
It's not too expensive and you can buy it up to 24 hours before your wedding.

Re: Too much drinking...
I just want to be sure that our happy occasion does not turn into a tragic one. I want everyone to have a good time, but I want them to be able to talk about it the next day, you know what I mean?
I am glad I am not the only one with that concern. Do you think East Wind would comply if we decide shut the alcohol down at 10:30? Does anyone really need to have any alcohol before getting into a vehicle?

Don't think I've ever been to a really great, fun wedding that didnt include at least one person who got too drunk!

Hey I don't mind people drinking (as long as the aren't too obnoxious or barfing on the floor), I just don't want things to get out of control or people getting hurt. For anyone who knows the William Floyd Pkwy, it is very dark at night. It is 100x more dangerous w/ a drunk on the road (as is every road).

Re: Too much drinking...
I have bartended for 12 yrs and I know that if someone gets wasted in my establishment and gets behind the wheel and injures someone I and my bar are held responsible as well as the person. It only makes sense that the same would apply to catering halls. I would think that valets are taught not to return the keys to an intoxicated individual.

Re: Too much drinking...
well the only ppl i'm worried about getting too drunk are some of the groomsmen...but they'll be a limo at the end of the night to take the bridal party home.
ETS: I'm more nervous about one of them falling into the pool at crest hollow.

Re: Too much drinking...
I talked to my hall about this... basically the BM told me that the staff would look out for people that are too plastered and cut them off prior to it becoming a problem. He also suggested that I indicate possible 'problems' on my seating chart so they know to keep an extra eye out.

We got Wedding insurance for this reason. Not only can the hall be sued, but you could too.

Re: Too much drinking...
I would never think about shutting down the bar early for a few that can't control them selves but I have seen weddings where people did get cut off by bartenders at the wedding. For my wedding, I offered shuttle service to and from the hotel for guests who wanted to endulge. We know our friends and family liked to party and we offered a way for them not to drink and drive and be safe. For the rest of my guests, I would hope they are mature adults who did not drink and drive and I hope friends did not let them if they were.

That's a good point, but I'd rather prevent any type of tragedy from happening at all.
FH says I can't worry about keeping everybody from being stupid.
He kinda has a point. Friends of our provided a bust to take people back to a hotel, which we took advantage of.
Some of us stayed up & drank in the hotel & one of my freinds ended up going out to get beer & ended up getting arrested.
So as much as my freinds tried to prepare for, they couldn't prepare for everything.
That being said, I would still like to take some precautions. We don't have vallet parking. I have seen bartenders at weddings turn people down. I'm sure the valets ( at yours)will aslo withhold keys.
I tried to book motels as close as possible to the hall also, so my firends who know better when they are sober, will stay there & I may put cab #s in the hotel gift bags.
You still can't account for people that stay elsewhere, or go home. I am kind of depending on the sober people to look out for those they are with.

Re: Too much drinking...
For example FH's parents drink...both of them, and they will be driving two young kids home. I am not having a limo because the ceremony is at the same place as the reception and it's an extra expense (since we are staying at the Inn that night anyway). I like the idea of putting a taxi's # on favors. I don't know what to do. I am hoping that since mine is a sunday night people will have to be more conservative because of work the next morning.

Re: Too much drinking...
We're going to have alot of drinkers at our wedding so we're going to provide a bus service that will pick up and drop off in two seperate areas of queens where we both come from. Where not paying for the bus but we will make all the arrangements. We've done it for other weddings we went to and it works out to be less then $40 a couple.
Who wants to worry about something horrible happening after your wedding because people enjoyed themselves too much.
