My SIL's hospital (Winthrop) has a BFing class which she was interested in taking, and she asked me to go since we're due 4wks apart, both plan to BF and she didnt want to go alone...
It was nice to get a refresher on it all, and to get the tips and information back in my mind...
The Instructor was previously President of the Lactation Board of LI (or something like that). She was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and funny...
It did bring back memories of the several mistakes I made and hopefully I will start on the right foot this time and not make the same mistakes....
and now that I have so many of you BF Champs here, it should be all so much easier!
Thank God we didnt use the dolls and stuffed animals that we were required to bring
To BF Mommies Due soon - This reminded me to bring a little notebook again, to the hospital, to take notes on when the the baby was fed, which side, how long, etc. and to count the dirty and wet diapers... This is very important in establishing your schedule and pattern for baby. Also, in your last month, you can start putting Lansinoh lotion on your nipples to soften them up more for the baby... yet she said nip stimulation should be avoided in the last month because it can bring on contractions early... OK, Lemme run to John to make him induce labor now that I know that secret !

OMG Thank goodness!

I read that you have to stimulate your nipples some crazy amount to help bring on early labor/contractions. I can't remember what it was though...but I remember thinking, OMG, who touches themselves that much!?
I have my class on Feb 27th and looking forward to it. I just cannot wait to discuss booby for over 3 hours!

Re: Took a Great BFing Class
That's great Anna, I really wish I had taken a class before Lyla was born. That is one piece of advice that I would give to soon-to-be-mommies, learn a little about it and make sure to have a support group, including professionals. I was so caught up with labor and delivery that I had no knowledge about bfding.
Lyla's 8 months today, and now when I nurse her, I just think of how beautiful it is that I can give this to her. I love holding her, and how she plays with my face and hair while she drinks her milk. Sometimes she latches off and stares at me, like she's waiting for me to smile at her, and then she starts laughing. Sorry to go off on my own tangent.....!

Re: Took a Great BFing Class
Thanks girls Trish, Nancy, you'll LOVE the class. I wish it was longer (it was 2hours)...because you get all these questions in your mind...
Cira- I TOTALLY thought of you as we were in Mineola But who'd wanna bother you at 9pm, two big preggo girls tired and in search of coffee
Niha, I TOTALLY know what you mean about being prepared early. But I do think its one of those things that no matter how much you read and hear the pros, you need to try and experience and do it yourself to totally become part of the experience. My sister was everything short of an LC when I gave birth last time. She was right by my side, READY to latch him on, ready to watch me step by step, (and ready to nurse him herself if I got discouraged im not kidding) and she did help me alot with the right hold, the latch, watching the babys mouth, my positioning... but it was one of those things that seemed PERFECT when the nurse or LC or my sister was watching and when they left...things fell apart on me
and what really annoyed me at the hospital, was that 4 different nurses gave me TOTALLY differing advice which was very confusing, fustrating and winded up causing me unnecessary pain and serious engorgement
Niha, keep rambling, I love hearing about the bonding experience... how precious...

Re: Took a Great BFing Class
I also took a BF class at Columbia. It was amazing- so much better and more helpful than Lamaze. I would highly reccomend taking one.

Re: Took a Great BFing Class
I have a dumb question. Do you pay for these classes or are they part of your hospital care? This is all new to me but my hospital is Winthrop

Re: Took a Great BFing Class
Some hospitals and OB offices include classes. My last OB included several different classes for new moms.
This specific class was $15 pp. Well worth it.
Lamaze costs about $150 or so. It varies from hospital to hosp and Dr to Dr.

My birthing class and BF class are paid in full under my health insurance.

That's cool. I should look into this. But the BF class sounds well worth it out of pocket.
