Took Matthew to dr.... eczema question, and also Hypoallergenic formula question....

I took Matthew to his regular doctor this morning to stress the fact that I feel something just isn't right, that he is fussy all the time, still. I tried getting an appt with a GI doc, but can't get one until May. Anyway, his ankles have been extremely dry and they have been telling us to put lotion on him. This time I was told he has eczema and that is why he could be fussy. They prescribed a hydrocortisone cream.

Do you think that eczema could be the cause for his fussiness?

Also, if this doesn't seem to help, we are thinking of switching to the expensive hypoallergenic formula. For those of you who switched to this, can you tell me, what was your child's 'behaviors' before switching and how was it afterwards? Do you think it's worth a shot?

THANKS!!!!

My daughter had bad reactions to 2 formulas. She would cry and fuss and sometimes scream in pain from one of them. She wasn't able to burp on the one formula and would kick up her legs in pain. Then they switched her to soy formula and she reacted to that one with really bad spit ups and sometimes projectile.

She had reflux and she also has exzema. Her legs are always dry. Once in a while she will get red marks on her face. She never reacted to the exzema but we are always putting lotion on her.We don't use steroids or cortizones. We prefer not to. We use Eucerin lotion and dr prescribed Elidel on top of it. It works great.

Rebecca had tried reg. enfamil, similac, soy versions and lactofree versions of formula before we tried Nutramigen. It was truly a lifesaver. She would cry from one feeding pretty much into the next. I couln't believe a baby could be that unhappy all the time. Once we switched, it took about to days and I had a new baby. I would rather be poor than have such an unhappy child.
At the time my doctor had suggested I wait another week. I just decided to do what I felt was best and tried the Nutramigin. It was the best decision ever.
We introduced solids slowly too since the doctor determined she had an immature digestive system. Rice was a nightmare....It bought back the same gas pains and crying she had befor. she reacted favorably to the oatmeal and barley.
She has ezema too. We use an over the counter .5% hydrocortizone cream and Eucerin cream every day. We had a humidifier in her room, but honestly I don't think that is really that much of a help.
do what you think is best. If he's that unhappy what do you have to lose?

We were feeding the Enfamil Lipil w/ Iron to Jake and it was awful. He would scream like he was in so much pain, he would go to the bathroom 20 times a day and his butt was so sensitive from it, it was acutally bleeding. After 2 1/2 months the doctor finally made us try the Enfamil Nutramitgen. It was truly a lifesaver. He is always amiling now and burps easily. He never has those screaming fits anymore. We found out that he was alergic to the milk based formula. I know how expensive that formula is, but since it was medically necessary for him to be on it, it is covered by my insurance company (I have Blue Cross). I pay 40.00 a month for 30 of the 32oz ready to feed cans.

But let me tell you, I would have paid any amount of $$ to take away the pain he was having. Enfamil Nutramitgen was truly a lifesaver.

Thank you so much ladies. I think we are going to try the Nutramigen. I'm hoping it helps. My son does have his happy moments, but they don't last long. I would LOVE for him to be happy more of the day.... it would be worth all the money I had to see him happier. Thanks so much!

my daughter also had eczema... first the dr. (not her pedia) prescribed her 2.5% hydrocortisone but a month later during a scheduled vaccine, another dr. (who gave her the shot) prescribed her Elidel since its steroid free. Elidel worked wonders, I loved it. This Dr. also suggested that Vaseline works good too. But this saturday, my FIL saw a news report about Elidel that it may cause cancer , so i called her pediatrician this week and she immediately had me stop using Elidel and prescribed back the hydrocortisone.

who is your pediatrician? they can help you see a pediatric gastro earlier if you ask, samantha had to go to one and they took her in as an 'emergency appointment' sometimes you can get an appointment the day you call etc.... if someone cancels or they squeeze you in :) Good luck, we went to one out of good samaritan and he was very helpful. SHe couldnt tolerate soy so she has been on alimentum every since.

She didnt have any behavioral problems from the switch but she did have small amounts of blood in her stool for a bit and then it went away

Re: Took Matthew to dr.... eczema question, and also Hypoallergenic formula question....

It's a group of dr's he sees, so he sees someone new every time he goes. It seems like they don't think anything is wrong with him because he looks and sounds healthy..... but his unhappiness during the day and night tells me something differently. I just am starting to secondguess myself and wonder if he is just tired all the time and fusses because he wants to sleep but doesn't know how to... it takes so much rocking, walking, etc to get him to fall to sleep... even during the night, he has been waking up every hour, not to eat, but crying that he needs the pacifier to fall back to sleep. I don't know what to do anymore. I wonder, could the formula make his stomach gassy and that is why he can't seem to fall asleep or stay asleep long? I think we are going to try the Nutramigen today..... and hope it helps! We feel horrible and keep having to remind ourselves that he is a baby..... it does take its toll on us when we barely sleep because he is always waking up..... but DH and I had a nice talk last night reminding each other that he is just a baby and cries for a reason and we need to do our best, which we do... and that sometimes our best is not enough and he is still going to cry, and that's ok... somebody had written that on another site and I liked what she said. We start going crazy because we just don't know how to help him.... I hope this new formula helps him! Thanks again!
