I had a root canal done on my front left tooth about 5 months ago---within the past few days it is very sensitive to touch and it almost throbbing. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I thought the nerve in this tooth was gone so why am I feeling pain???

Re: tooth pain question
I used to be a dental assistant many moons ago. It's common and normal to have sensitivity for a while after a root canal, but 5 months is a long time. I think it's probably best to have your dentist take a look at it. It could also be pain coming from a tooth that's next to or near the one with the root canal. It's probably nothing at all. Maybe just a passing sensitivity. Still it's best to be sure.

Re: tooth pain question
Dani, did you have a cap put on that tooth? I feel as tho I am the QUEEN of root canals! I ahve had all 6 of my front teeth done because of an accident...
I had the same problem with one that was worked on...and I did get a throbbing sensation, so I went ASAP...and it appears as tho somehow an infection set in, it was about 6 months after---he drilled a tiny hole in the back for it all to drain, and it did..it was just built up pressure----but be sure to go if you re in ANY pain...beleive me, I learned the hard way Many tims because of a dentist fear!

Re: tooth pain question
Holly-yes, I do have a post and crown on my tooth I hope I don't have an infection. I hate tooth pain, did it hurt after you got it drained or was it better?

Re: tooth pain question
Thanks Jamie How have you been? I've been meaning to call you but i've been crazy this first week back at work
I've had an infection (from a cavity filling that should have been a root canal) and 10 years later...it was the worse pain of my life...I would wake up with the throbbing...and would have to sit up (to elevate my mouth over the heart)
I was popping aleve like tic tacs...
I would call you dentist and say its an emergency so you can get in right away...

Re: tooth pain question
id definatly have it checked out.. i agree to get the appointment as an emergency visit.. ive gone through 3 root canals ...after the rootcanal at the next visit 6 months later my dentist would always check that tooth.. it could be an infection, or they might need to go back and work on the tooth again..

Re: tooth pain question
Well I went to the dentist today and good thing I did. They did an x-ray and found out that a terrible infection has set and I need a whole new root canal and gum surgery on that tooth. I guess the crown didn't 'fit right' so bacteria built up under my tooth They are putting me on antibiotics for a few weeks to clear the infection and will do the surgery after the wedding. uggh-i hate dental work

Re: tooth pain question-with update
Dani – I had that same problem. Although mine wasn’t caused by a cap, but the nerve in the tooth died and the bacteria built up and caused an infection. All this happened 2 months before my wedding, so I had to have a root canal and cap and post done before the wedding. I actually had the cap put in 2 days before the wedding. Thankfully no problems since then. Good Luck with yours – thankfully you took care of it before it was too late. Feel Better.
P.S. forgot to mention that the cap they were going to put on wouldn't have set right either, so I had a 'crown lengthening' procedure done. I guess that's what they'll do for you. It wasn't too bad at all!
dani...sorry to hear that...as I have been in your pain...
my dentist asked me if I smelled anything when we drilled into the tooth...b/c apparantly tooth infections reek!! great thanks for telling me my mouth reeks!!
the antibiotics should help the infection
