Top 10 Registry Advice from a Newlywed :)
I hope this helps someone! These are just some things that worked out and other stuff I wish I had known.
My Newlywed Top 10 Registry Tips:
1. Register for expensive sheets and towels:
This serves two purposes. First, the best thing you can invest in is your bed. You'll thank yourself every single day! Second, when guests stay at your house, you'll be glad you got those super fluffy towels and that you arent scrambling to find nice sheets. On a side note, after the wedding I promise you'll have a harder time justifying those 400 thread count $89 sheets, so splurge!!
2. Register for things in WHITE.
This means blankets, towels, sheets, and dishes. First, any white dishes can be used to supplement your china in case you dont get all of it. Second, it allows you to bleach everything. This way, when that mascara gets on your favorite towels, they arent goners. This has really saved me on a few occasions. Plus, I know our styles will change. I can always change the duvet, but the all white blankets will match for years to come.
3. Warranty, Warranty, Warranty.
Before you register for that $299 toaster, make sure that you'll have it for years. Many of the expensive items (appliances, luggage, even silverware) comes with a warranty. Some have none at all. Its worth doing a little research so you know that vacuum is fixable should anything happen. No one wants a broken $400 vacuum 2 weeks after the wedding (I know, I have one, ugh.)
4. Register at Bedbath.
CASH back, NOT 'store credit'. Enough said :)
5. Update frequently.
My friend registered in January. Her shower was in April. By April, many of the things she had registered for were no longer available. As a guest it was frustrating, and I'm sure she was wondering why so many people didnt buy off her registry. Most places have online registry sites, so its very easy to see what needs fixing, updating, or deleting.
6. Keep it simple.
If you really want everything in the store, then go for it! But sometimes, that 500+ checklist of 'must-have's can be very overwhelming. Make sure you really want the things on your registry. The first time I went I was registered for all sorts of kitchen stuff I couldnt pronouce, because it all sounded so important! (And I cant even cook!) Its your home, and only you know how it works and what you need.
7. Dont be afraid to register for china.
SOOOO many people gave me the 'Dont bother, you'll get 3 place settings' speech that I was terrified I'd end up with 1 fork, a plate, and 2 glasses. I ended up with every single place setting. If you really want it, you can return things to complete your set. Chances are you'll get more than you thought.
8. Register for sets.
As an example, my friend registered for a knife block and each knife separately. Imagine this as a guest. Where do you start? Are you really going to get the couple 3 knives as a gift??? Its worked out better if you register for the knife block WITH the knives, or the silverware SET. I know everyone has different opinions here, but as a guest, I think most people are more inclined to buy something that seems more substantial.
9. This may be controversial, but I suggest taking the store associate with you.
I absolutely admit that this depends on the person you get. If you end up with someone nice, they can be an invaluable asset to tell you what looks good and isnt, and what brands will last a lifetime.
10. Dont feel guilty stalking.
Everyone does it lol.
I hope this little bit of newlywed advice helps! Good luck and congrats to everyone!!!
