Re: Torn!!! Really need advice!!
wow big question. . you would be moving from here? was that in the plans?
how would you feel about buying the house as an investment but not moving down yet? I would say just take your time and think about it. . it sounds like it could be great but you need to know you will be up for it and not end up resenting FH for having you guys move. .. either way good luck with your decision

One thing that you FH needs to really need to consider , In Orlando especially the house are inexpensive compared to NY that is fact . But the jobs do not really pay at ALL . The average person works about 2-3 jobs done there to live comfortable. Most of the jobs come for Disney and Universal Studios. Do you both have professions that will allow you to find a job hopefully right away? . My grandparents relocated down there over 15 years ago. My mother moved in '06 she was working but now has been out of work for almost a year there really are no jobs down there. The houses are inexpensive but upkeeping is $$$. My grandparent always complain about how costly the utilities bill are etc...

Honestly!! An advice from someone who did this.... FH and I moved to GA..FH has cousins and an uncle who we see once in a while... Everyone has there own life and we've made friends real quick... We are BLESSED to have found GREAT jobs (more than what we were making in NY!!).... I miss my family DEARLY but when you are commited to start your own family you make sacrifices... Our relationship in NY was good!! When we decided to move and purchase our home our relationship did BEYOND a 360!! We made the best out of the situation.. Our families will always be there.. But it was time for us to start ours!! TRUST ME.. I'm close with my family.. Its worth the try... I travel every other month to NY..
FM me if you have any questions...

well, honestly I think you guys should be married for a while before you move to another state... settle into married life first.. And these villages? Are there people your age? You will have to find jobs out there.. there are a lot of things to consider here

My FSIL and her husband live right outside of Orlando and they are complaining about how bad the economy is down there (even worse than up here). They are both execs with Disney and each month worry that they're going to be laid off.
Also, they tell us all the time that even though the cost of living down there is cheaper, the salaries are so much less so they end up spending the same percentage (if not more) of their salaries on housing, utilities, etc.
FMIL and FFIL live on the west coast of FL and have had their house on the market for 7 months without a nibble! They said the housing market is awful down there. Six houses in their development are now in foreclosure.

What about jobs? I wouldn't make a move like that unless you know you have a job there. The job market is pretty tough in FL right now too.
Also is this development finished? Do yourself a favor and don't buy in until it is finished and you know people are moving into it. You can not believe how many developments have stopped mid construction. There is one by my parents house that has about 40 houses where there should have been 400 and only 10 are full. The people are stuck there and miserable.
Personally I wouldn't, I don't know, I love Florida, I just came home. But there is a reason people retire there and don't start life there. Really the school systems are pretty awful and its hard to make a decent living.
But that is just my opinion.

Is he taking the bar in NY or FL? FL does not allow attorneys to waive-in, meaning that he'd have to take the bar exam there, even if he takes NY and passes.

Re: Torn!!! Really need advice!!
You and FH need to discuss why you are moving. The way you described it, it sounds like FH wants to move solely because of a good price on a house. This is the wrong reason to move. You both need to consider job opportunities (I hear FL is really bad right now), whether you want to raise kids there, whether the school system the house is in is good, what family is around, how much it will cost in airfare to visit other family members, etc.

And to follow up, now that I know FH is taking the bar -- my sister is also in law down in FL, and the market is BAD. Do NOT NOT NOT move or buy anything until he has a job lined up. Please don't.

Re: Torn!!! Really need advice!!
Hmm... my grandparents live in the Villages, I've been down there a bunch of times. The areas surrounding there kinda have nothing going on, it's a lot of church communities and stuff. My cousins who are in their late 20's moved down to Tampa and are like an hour from the Villages... I mean they have a lot of stuff going on in the Villages but it's definitely geared towards older people. If you're interested in Florida I'd look further south, it's more 'happening'... but it is nice weather and everything down there, I just think you'll get bored in that particular area if you're new there and leaving all of your family and friends behind.

Re: Torn!!! Really need advice!!
I think you really need to look into things first. Many developers in FL are going bankrupt because they cannot sell the houses. My parents are down in that area and its BAD.
Also, do not make any plans until your FH has taken the bar and passed. Coming from personal experience taking any states bar is not easy. I took 2 states and I failed the one everyone said was easy. He has so much up in the air until he finishes school and pass a bar. I know I finished law school just over a year ago and my life is still changing and NOPE no law job yet. And many atty that I know that have been in their jobs for years have lost jobs. Tell him to sit tight on moving.
The market in FL is not changing anytime soon. I say wait it out.

Re: Torn!!! Really need advice!!
Well to be honest, before he is so set on moving there and making up his mind and saying that BOTH of you are going to move there. He should talk to you first and its something the two of you need to decide and agree on. Sorry, but I don't think it's only for him to decide.
I agree with the other ladies about the job situation. I know he fell in love with the place but has he looked into jobs there and what would be available for the two of you.
ETA: like others have said, the situation in FL is not good at all right now. they have more than half of the homes in foreclosure and jobs harder to find.
