Have any of you ever had a non-religious ceremony or know where I can find non-religious vows? We are not getting married in a church, are not religious at all (more like anti-religion) and have no idea what to say to each other as vows and what kind of officiant to have. We will not say the word 'god' or have any religious references at our ceremony. Any suggestions?

Re: Totally non-religious ceremonies/vows
DH is Jewish and I'm pretty non-religious. We wanted SOME Jewish traditions, but we really wanted to have a 'different' ceremony- without a lot of God. This was what was right for US.
Anyway, as part of our ceremony we wrote 'statements' about why we wanted to marry the other person. They were maybe 2 minutes long each and we wrote about why we loved each other. They were sweet and a little funny and everyone really liked them because they said that they really got to see 'us' like we are with each other. AND, we didn't see each other's before the ceremony. We heard them for the first time during the ceremony. It made it more special that way.
Because we did the readings, we kept our real 'vows' short. We both said the same 'I Do's'- 'Do you ____ promise to take ___ to be your husband/wife, to love, respect and support throughout life's journey?'
But, to each his own. You need to decide what's right for you.

You can work with your officiant to tailor your ceremony to be anything you want- especially non-religious officiants. You may even want to considered having a friend or relativ get ordained. There are plenty of non-religious readings you can pick and you and your DH can write your own vows.

Oh, I should add that we had DH's sister marry us- so we COULD write our own ceremony any way that we wanted.

Part of our ceremony will be the poem 'Hands of the Bride & Groom'. I found it in the back of one of the wedding mags I bought and I just cried when I read it!!! I showed it to FH and he got all misty eyed and said that these should be our vows!
My cousin is an interfaith minister and she will be marrying us.... I think it makes our ceremony that much more intimate I can't wait!
