Totally NWR but if you are a dog owner, please help!

My dog eats doody. Does anyone else's dog do this?
He doesn't eat his own but he eats other dogs that he finds in the park or on the street and it's just so gross!
The thing is..he ONLY does this when he's with me...never when my mom or FH is walking him.
He won't stop no matter how bad I yell at him.
I know this is gross..sorry but I'm concerned. I asked the vet at he said some dogs just do this.
Jack is four years old and started doing this about two years ago. I'm afraid he's going to get sick.

my dog did this when he was a puppy

you are going to laugh at me when i say this but our vet told us NOT to pick up the poo in front of him - which is hard to do but if he goes by the house we take him inside first. . . if we are walking him i will take him a block away before FH cleans up

i dont know if this helped or if he just grew out of it - but he stopped!

we tried all types of sprays but it just made him more curious - and we tried the pill that makes the poo taste gross but he threw up the first time we gave it to him and we never did it again

HTH!

he is not going to get sick from it - its pretty common in dogs so dont worry about that!

ETA: ok i read your post again so i see he doesnt eat his own so i dont know if this will work SORRY!

Omg I seriously think he's mad at me. Today he got whacked for eating the doody and then just now he was EATING OUT OF MY GARBAGE..something he has NEVER not ONCE done. He always eat the doody but he has never, not even as a puppy went into the garbage.
I'm worried now.

has anything changed in your routine?? have you not had a chance to walk him for a day or two? i know my dog will get crazy if we dont' get a chance to walk him for a couple days. ( we put him out on a run in the yard to go to the bathroom).
dogs need a lot of attention, just like kids, or they get bored.... so maybe he feels like hes not getting enough attention/play time with you., and hes acting out because hes bored....

If you are on a walk and you see him even start to look down, pull up on the leash and say no. I learned that on the dog whisperer and it has worked really well for my dog (a lab mix) who will just go chasing and try to eat anything....frogs, bugs, poop, garbage, whatever!

I was a vet tech for 13 years. Usually when an animal eats it's own bowl movement it is bc it is deficient in a certain vitamin. I suggest you start putting him on a doggie vitamin. You can get them at any pet store and are usually a tasty treat!

that's what i've heard as well.
my dog eats his. it's soooo nasty. he eats anything and everything.
oh and if he does something naughty, like the garbage routine, MANY times it's out of spite. see, quinn here knows when he's bad - he just doesn't care. he'll do it and look at me and run right into his cage. lil bugger

Your dog may be in need of attention. You know.. 'mommy' yelling at him may be better than nothing.

I used to have a dog that used to do peepee and poopoo in the house just for attention.

i think i might agree with the attention thing a little bit, my dog used to eat his poop and my other dogs' poop too, the other dogs are now gone and since he is the only dog getting lots of love he doesn't do it anymore,
i will say try to do what you can to stop it because to this day my dog's breath still stinks like he just ate poop and his teeth are a wreck and he had to have 2 removed,
no real advice on how to stop it though,
good luck

My dad was talking to one of his customers and said: 'DO you know why your dog licks his balls?' The lady said 'No'. My dad being the blunt person he is just said: ' because he can.' I love that she fell for it. I just wanted to add that. It happened today,

I used Deter. It worked great-no more sh*% eating.

coprophagy (the medical term for eating poop)

that might be the best part of the article....that it has a medical term!

sorry your dog is driving you nuts with this...it's gross.
