town hall marriage- help!

Hi everyone! FH and I are still planning a wedding for summer 2013 but have decided to get legally married before hand. He is in the military and will be leaving early June so we decided to go up to Long Island and get married Memorial day weekend! We will be going to town hall to get our license on Friday and then have to wait 24 hours so are looking for an officiant to marry us on Saturday (Town Hall is closed). We were given the name of someone by a town clerk who should be contatcing us, but we are not yet sure of her availability. The cost is only $75.

My question is...has anybody done this before? How did it work out? And can you recommend someone who will marry us on a weekend for around that same price range (or cheaper!) that doesn't need to be reserved months in advance?

TIA!

Re: town hall marriage- help!

Good luck to you two! I know there are a bunch of girls on here who got legally married before their weddings. People do it for lots of reasons (health insurance is a big one)... some people tell everyone and others keep it quiet. It's more common than you think!

You might try posting on Vendors Helping Brides to see if any of the LIW officiants are available and happy to help out a military couple before your FH deploys. If it's just a small elopement and not a big wedding, hopefully they'll drop their prices.

Or you could have a friend/family member get ordained as a Universal Life Minister (www.themonastery.org/). Check and make sure that they're legally allowed to officiate where you plan on getting married... if they can, I think it's free!

Thanks so much for all the info!! That person got back to us and is going to do it at my parent's house! That's good to know about getting someone ordained too! And we will be keeping it very quiet
