Toxoplasmosis and German measles (rubella) immunity (or lack thereof)

Toxoplasmosis and German measles (rubella) immunity (or lack thereof)

I got the blood work test results back at my doctors appointment last Thursday. Everything looked good except for two things the doctor said I should be careful about. The first was that I don’t have an immunity to toxoplasmosis, which I was not too worried about as we don’t have a cat and I will not be changing any litter boxes or doing any gardening where I would come into contact with cat feces. I also know you can contact it from eating raw meats, and that’s something I never do either.

However, the second issue was that I do not have an immunity to Rubella (German measles). I was vaccinated as a child, but my immunity is not present now. Has anyone not had an immunity to this and what did they do as a result? Are the German measles like the chicken pox, where someone can have it and not show signs for a while? I am a little nervous about this, as the holidays are coming up and I will be spending it with tons of nieces, nephews and friends kids who are in nursery, kindergarten and grammar school. My doctor told me to avoid anyone with German measles like the plague – well, yes, that’s good advice, but can someone have it and not know it?

I’m just looking to see if anyone else had this non-immunity issue.

Given that most children are immunized against Rubella, the chances of you coming in contact with a child with Rubella are small. You will just have to be sure to get the vaccine after the baby.

Thanks, the doc said I would get a booster after I delivered.

I just didn't think German Measles were still a possibility these days?

I was actually just tested for this (rubella). My doctor wanted to make sure I was immune before TTC. I'm not, so I need to get the booster.

(not TTC in the immediate future, but he wanted to do the test to find out)

When I was preggers, we discovered that I was not vaccinated against Rubella. I had no problems,
The day after the birth, right before I was to leave my nurse was supposed to give me the shot. But I hightailed it out of the hopital, I did not want to wait.
So as of now I still have no vaccination against Rubella. If I get around to it great, if not. I'm not going to worry about it.
The way I see it, I'm morei n danger of getting chicken pox during pregnancy than German Measeles and I've already had chickenpox.

Trish I had the same problem while I was preggo with Damien. I was OK as was said before the chances of you coming into contat are slim. I also didn't have any antibodies for regular ole' chicken pox, which I had when I was 18. Right before you leave the hospital they will give you the immunization. I took it because if we decide to have another baby I won't have to worry even a little

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am getting over the intial shock of hearing that something may not be 100% right.

I will have my booster shot before I leave the hospital because I plan on having all my kids rather quickly (as quickly as my body will let me!!).
