TRANSIT STRIKE HAS BEGUN...UPDATE

Original post by ChrissynRicky

NYC transit strike update: The union said that it would begin a partial strike on some private bus lines later today, but would delay a citywide strike until at least 12:01 a.m on Tuesday.

NYC buses and subways are currently running (8:30 a.m. EST). The bus lines where union officials said the strikes will begin are Jamaica Buses Inc. and Triboro Coach Corporation.

Kind of related, but kind of not. Did part of that surplus end up paying for the dumb 'holiday bonus'es given to riders? When I got a 10-ride off peak ticket and a metrocard with my MONTHLY UNLIMITED metrocard and LIRR ticket, I was confused with what I was to do with it!

Yes it did. And I had the same reaction. Like *** am I supposed to do with this??? So, I gave it to my mom for when she comes into the city w/ her girlfriends. At least someone benefited from it.

my 2 cents....

Iand who is the freakn' genius that chose 12/15 as the contract end date?

I'd also like to know the answer to this question! And I'd also like to know why they always seem to negotiate these contracts at the last minute. I was thinking about this 2 weeks ago, wondering what was going to happen. But we didn't hear anything on the news until the beginning of this week. Doesn't make sense. Then again, no one asked my opinion.

You know, this country is just very strange regarding who is rewarded for following the 'rules'. It is absolutely not a meritocracy.

I just heard that Howard Stern will earn $500 million over the next 3 years. I never heard his show but I saw it on t.v. a few times and all he ever has on there is half naked women - on his RADIO show But teachers make what $35K. It's really ridiculous.

I did not know that some MTA workers made under $30K. Thanks for that info.

I'm sorry, but but I disagree with this statement completely.

This country offers great opportunity, and it is the choice of people whether or not they should take advantage of it.

I also do not understand what the 'rules' are and those following them are rewarded.

I agree with a few points the MTA is fighting for, but disagree with a lot more.

As far as Howard Stern goes, he is being paid not as a SALARY but as an allowance for the entire show, which includes paying employees. To top it off, if you listened to him more than the few times, you would come to realize that his show is not about 'naked chicks' all the time and does include a lot of great things. However, that is our choice to listen or not.

There's a big difference between the private sector and the public sector. You must compare apples to apples, and not apples to oranges. Howard Stern vs. the MTA - apples to oranges.

I was out all day. No need to apologize for disagreeing

I am not comparing Howard Stern to the MTA union members strike. I just mentioned it since I heard it all on the news within seconds of each other. I realize that Howard is not being paid with my tax dollars. It's just interesting to note who in this country commands huge amounts in monetary compensation.

As for the 'rules', we are all told that if you work hard, get an education (high schoo, college or more) that you will get a better job or at least better pay for the same job. That is just not the case. Life is not a meritocracy.

I happen to know too many people personally that take advantage of the opportunity in this country (i.e. going to college and graduate school) and all for what, a $30K job that allows them to barely scrape by with student loan debt. Granted, I have friends that make in a range from $25K - $350K+ but the majority of them played by the 'rules' and it did not pan out as far as the alleged rewards for following the plan.

They've been negotiating for 2 months...the MTA, according to the TWU, did not negotiate in 'good faith'.

NYC Transit Update email sent to work:

Dear Colleagues:

There has been some contradictory and perhaps confusing information in many reports you may have seen or heard this morning. What we do know at this point is the following:

Negotiations between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Transport Workers Union were temporarily suspended this morning after the union rejected an MTA offer. The union set a new strike deadline for 12:01 am Tuesday, December 20.

At this time, all buses and subways are operating normally.

While delaying the strike decision, the union did authorize an immediate strike against two private bus companies in Queens (Jamaica Buses and Triboro Coach). The city has enacted a plan to provide alternate service to affected riders of those lines.
