ok im really confused with this whole gratuity thing.
we went to look at a transportation place yesterday and the gratuity was included in the price. so when she gave me the final number- i confirmed that gratuity was included- her reply was 'yes its incuded but our drivers go above and beyond so if you wanted to give extra you could.'
im really baffled lately at places that include gratuity in their price but then expect that you give additional tip?????? shouldnt a tip be based on the performance that day?? and not be included in the price to begin with???
this happened with the caterer for our engagement party- the gratuity was included for the chefs- much more then i would have thought to give. we paid them the full amount on the invoice and they were looking at us like we didnt give a tip????

We were told the same thing, that the standard 20% gratuity was included in our price, but if we wanted to offer more on the day of, we're welcome to. Honestly I don't see anything wrong with that. For me it's no different than going out to a restaurant. I almost always automatically tip 20%, but if the service is exceptional, then I'll give more. I've just been thinking of it that way.

Tip is included in the price, but I don't think the driver gets that entire percentage that you pay.

Its confusing because they are including the gratuity so I dont think you would have to give an extra tip unless you thought the preson did a really great job and you wanted to.

It's definitely 'forward' BUT think about how many people DO NOT tip! That must be sooo frustrating for people in the service business -- especially for a wedding and especially if they do an amazing job. I think we would all be surprised at how many people do not tip....

You know- I never thought of it like that...I guess those companies are just trying to protect themselves from getting 'stiffed'...

Absolutely..... I mean, I understand what the girls are saying -- gratuity means an award given WITHOUT claim or obligation.. but people in the service business rely on their tips... If a good job has been done...a little something extra couldn't hurt. If they do a mediocre job...then they should just get the already added 20%. Just my opinion. :)

Yea i guess thats a good way to think about it. i personally would never NOT tip so i guess someone telling me how much and to give it upfront and then tip on top of that just erks me. but i guess its because people dont tip and then they get screwed.

According to my limo company, out of the 20% gratuity, 5% goes back to the house and 15% goes to the driver. I hope that's actually true.

I agree with you... but also remember that 'the house' usually keeps some of that money and the whole amount doesn't all go to the driver (or whomever the tip would be for). So are they really HELPING that person or themself???
