I hope this doesn't sound too dumb, but I've never used a travel agent before. Do you have to pay for their services? Is it like a real estate agent where you pay them a percentage? Otherwise, how do they make $?

Re: Travel Agent Question
no question is dumb... I work for a small travel agency in Brooklyn so this is how it works... when you book a vacation through a travel agent you dont pay for their services, they get commission from the company that they book your vacation through... for example we do a lot of packages through Apple Vacations and we get commission from them for booking with them...

as soon as you are sure that your plans wont change always always buy insurance just in case generally you should be fine booking your vacation 6 months before (thats what we did when we planned to go to Dominican Republic during Easter time)

Re: Travel Agent Question
also remember for international flights that summer time usually has the most expensive tickets... the period between June 15th and the end of August is known as peak season, which means the prices are the highest at the time....

Re: Travel Agent Question
Theire fees are usually built in the airlines no longer pay the travel agents a commission so the travel agents have to make up their money somehow but you can book a complete package with any major carrier and get the same travel protection and probably come out cheaper

thats true that most airlines dont pay commission anymore, so you are def better off getting your domestic tickets online... but for the international travel remember a lot of agencies have good contracts with airlines so you most likely will get a better deal in the travel agency...

I have worked for a major int'l carrier p/t for a number of years you will never get a better deal than the airlines...period....all travel agents and agencies pull their fare basis from the carriers the carriers allow anyone to purchase a ticket domestic or int'l up to one yr or more in advance (that is a great savings) also the carriers have more direct discounts with all of the major hotel chains worldwide they don't publish this info due to fair market practice....you can go to any airport and talk to a customer service agent at any time and get a price and book a reservation free of charge the airlines have the final say of putting a ticket time limit on your reservation which means if you like to shop prices you can run to every travel agency to compare prices and then come back to the carrier...agencies don't allow that and as for travel insurance that is a joke trust me I have seen many many customers a**ed out in the terminals, travel agent no where to be found or contacted after hours and the carriers are not obligated to honor any travel agent deals or travel insurance

Cool, but I was explaining that any travel insurance, it does not matter....the carriers American, Continental, Delta, United, US Air, etc are not obligated to honor it if your flight cancels they kindly stand you by for the next flight so travel insurance $$$ is $$$ wasted it goes into the pockets of the agencies...they cannot make the carriers do anything and when customers come into the airport and their flight is cancelled or delayed, they flip because they do not understand simple business...next time you fly ask for the contract for carriers which explains your rights and the airlines responsibility they all have the same contract it's printed on the back of your ticket or ticket envelope...and as far as Apple or GoGo Tours they are a big joke trust me

who knows, I have worked with both of these companies for years and have travelled with Apple myself, had no problems... but of course it is a business and big companies and airlines will in the end screw the poor folk thats life...
