Craig and I are going to my mom's in NJ this weekend, and Golem will be coming with us for the first time The longest we've had him in the car so far was for a 40 minute ride. He was in his crate that time, but now that he's bigger and better behaved in the car - I've just been sitting with him in the back seat, and he's happy to look out the window and lick the glass
My mom's place is only an hour drive with no traffic, so I'm sure Golem will be fine, but I just wanted to know how you keep your dogs occupied in the car on long trips? He really loves those rawhide chews, so I was thinking of bringing that in case we need it - but I wasn't sure if chewing on something the whole time might make him carsick? Or am I just thinking too much about this? DH says I do that all the time! Thanks!

Re: Traveling with puppy
We've taken the dogs when we drive down to Myrtle Beach to visit my mom.
We really don't give them anything to occupy them ... they'll look out the window or sleep mostly (well, not Hershey - she hates the car, refuses to relax and will almost fall alseep standing up because she just will not lay down!).
We usually give Bailey a tiny bit of food before so he doesn't get car sick although it really doesn't always stop him.

Re: Traveling with puppy
It's usually best to not give any food before travel in order to prevent getting sick.
I did say usually.
My sheperd mix is a pain in the neck in the car, tho she has gotten better - she usually whines and hops around a lot.
Our rottie is nervous too, but does well as long as you pet her.

Re: Traveling with puppy
We have taken several hour long trips with Satchmo alot since we got him. He always falls asleep after about 10 minutes. I always bring some kind of chew toy (including rawhides) for him, but he'll go to sleep after a couple of minutes of chewing. The rawhide is probably fine for a while, but I would also be concerned about car sickness if he stayed awake and ate the whole thing.

reggie always gets carsick but we have brought him on some long long trips he only gets carsick when he is in his crate so now we have to hold him. he is never interested in chewing anything on trips though.

Otis loves the car but the only bad thing is...He sits on my lap while I am driving!! SO bad I know!!! But the longest he has been in the car is half hour other than that it is 20 min rides to grandma's house for doggie daycare!!! LOL

Re: Traveling with puppy
As weird as it sounds you need a dog seatbelt or crate. With the seatbelt, its like a harness but very soft and comfortable. Our dog can still look out the window, sit, stand or lay down but is protected. One of my good friends was in a pretty bad car wreck and the police/EMTs said having her dog restrained saved his life (otherwise he would've gone through the windshield.

Fonzi was always getting car sick. I would sit him in his doggie car seat but it didnt help. Now I hold him on my lap and he is fine. He falls asleep. IF not on my lap though he will get sick.
