my Verizon blackberry immediately stopped working when I got to Greece so I had to use calling cards.

I know with at&t phones you can buy an international chip or something to put into the phone but Im not sure with Verizon

I have a Blackberry with AT&T, so I don't know how much this will help you since you have Verizon, but I'm sure they have similar plans. Best thing to do is call Verizon to ask - or they may have international plan information on their website.

Whenever I go abroad I make sure to sign up for international data (for internet use). About $25 per month will get you up to about 20MB of data which was enough for me to use it frequently.

Text messages will be up to $1 per text...I seem to think mine were 75 cents but I can't remember...

As for phone calls, it's expensive so try not to use your phone as much as possible. AT&T has a calling plan where you pay about $6 for a month and your international calling rates are a bit cheaper per minute. But you would have to check with the carrier beforehand how much it is per minute in the country you're going to.

As for the connection, I had to call AT&T before my first trip abroad to make sure my phone was set up for international service. No charge for this. And now it works whenever I leave the country.

Hope this helps!

Verizon will give you a loaner phone with data, but calls are like a dollar a minute
