Treating BP to Hair & Makeup

Treating BP to Hair & Makeup

I always planned to treat my bridal party (and our moms) to hair and makeup, but I completely under-budgeted what it would cost.

The prices I'm getting for makeup alone is out of our budget!!

Has anyone paid for hair & makeup for approx 9 people (including themselves), and if so - about how much was the total cost?

I have been looking around for hair and make up prices and omg! Put the word 'wedding' in and suddenly you can't get a hair trial for less than $85? Crazy! And seriously.. make up should not cost $100. But.. that's pretty much the range I've been seeing. Hopefully you can find something lower.

what kills me is that i wish i had looked into these costs when we set out to create our budget... i would have spent less on other areas had i known. but now i'm not really sure what to do?!? i feel strongly about wanting to treat everyone to these services. at $100 per person for hair, and another for makeup, for everyone including me to get done, i'm looking at probably $1800, and that's not including tips!!

what to do, what to do?!?

It's really generous of you to want to treat your BP to their hair and m/u :) ! Did you already tell your BP that you were treating them? If not, could you reconsider and treat them to their hair only (or m/u only) instead? To me that is still a nice thing to do and you can save some money...paying for one is a good compromise...and prices once you mention wedding are outrageous as you are finding out!
I paid for my BP's hair only and gave them the choice of paying for their own makeup or not...I couldn't afford to do both (I chose hair because most gals have a harder time with their hair (doing their own updos etc) than makeup). You can post here asking for makeup and hair artists that are reasonable.
P.S. I found one hair stylist I really liked (Joanne at Glamour Hair Salon, Huntington) that I used for my TTD....only $40 for hair and she did a beautiful job (I did not like my wedding day hair stylist!). GL!

I paid for half of their makeup b/c I felt 100 bucks was a lot to ask. Hair was costing 80 so I am having them pay that. There total for hair and makeup was 130..

ETA: I really wanted to pay for everyone's, everything but I just couldn't swing it.

would that be instead of their BM gifts?

in addition to the bridesmaid gifts, that seems verrry generous (and very pricey!)

i was planning to get the girls jewelry (nothing too crazy, but something tangible) in addition to the hair & makeup.

but now that i'm starting to get quotes - even from 'reasonable' vendors - i'm realizing just how expensive it's going to be.

i could do what sophisticat13 & michi suggested - just do hair or makeup... not both. meanwhile, i support any 'look' they choose; my wanting to do this for them is really b/c i want the experience of us all being together in the hotel room getting ready. i have no requirement whatsoever as far as how they want to do their hair & makeup.

out of curiosity - b/c i've only been a bridesmaid in 2 weddings - do most bridesmaids pay for their own? i was treated in the past, so wanted to do the same.

I've paid for my own hair in the past, and makeup was available but i chose not to do it (I'm pretty good at my own).

For my wedding (or for now at least), I plan on paying for their hair because I want them all to have their hair done. And since I'm looking at getting a stylist to come to us which may be more expensive, I want to help the girls out. However, I'm not asking them to get their makeup done and its not a requirement for me so I will not be paying for that. I am getting my makeup done so I will have it availabel for them should they want it, but I just can't swing it.

I am paying for only their hair as part of their gift.

What about going to a salon instead? Probably a bit cheaper and more than 1 of you could be done at a time.

I've known most people to pay for themselves....

.But for me personally, I've always done things my own hair and makeup because I have difficult skin and really thick long hair...so in my opinion getting your hair and makeup done is a luxury that if someone wants, they can pay for themselves. hopefully you figure it out!!! :)

Re: Treating BP to Hair & Makeup

I only had 1 girl in my BP. She had financial problems and we came to an agreement about hair and makeup. While I was not requiring her to do it, I stated that I would prefer she did. I also had an issue with needing 3 people to be done for hair/MU for the minimum to get someone to come to us.
Because of her financial issue, we discussed it openly. I told her that I would make up the difference of what she could afford. She asked that the amount I paid be her BP gift, but I also got her a gift.

Maybe you could do something like that. Lay out the expenses to the girls and let them know how much you can afford per girl, like if you budgeted 50/girl, and it is 80, they would pay 30, which is a great deal for them to pay for makeup.

Do you need someone to travel to you for the wedding day? My mother is a professional makeup artist and she charges around $80/face if she travels but at the shop it is only like $35 so perhaps if you can find somewhere local you will be able to swing it

You can still get the experience of everyone getting ready together without paying for them... if you have a make-up artist and hair girl come to the same location, you can all get ready together. I've been in a few bridal parties and I never expected the bride to pay for my hair/makeup. While it's a nice gesture, don't feel bad if you can't swing it. You are paying for a huge wedding... no one will expect you to pay for your BM's. That's something that comes along with being a bridesmaid!!

Hair for my BP = $80
M/U for my BP = $55

So if you're looking at 9 girls, you're at about $1200 there...

I agree with the other girls that there are other ways of treating your BP and having the experience of being all together getting dolled up forthe wedding without breaking the budget. Maybe everyone pays for their own hair and you pay for makeup?

good luck!

Re: Treating BP to Hair & Makeup

all my bms, my mom, and I are getting hair and makeup done at maximus salon in merrick.. they arent charging more for just because its a wedding. Just the bride will pay more.. which is normal

if people just want their hair curled or blown out.. nothing updoish its only 55 for hair.. around 50 for makeup!
