I'm using Counterpoint for my string quartet. They sound great on their CD. They charged me $475, but they have since raised their prices to $650. I found them on Gigmasters.com. You should check out that site.

I'm using Sterling Music Ensemble. I'm getting a flute quartet. They have been great to work with so far, but I can't really recommend them until after my wedding. In four weeks!

Girls, whatever you do, try and hear the people you are hiring audition for you live because a lot of times their cds are not the same people. Also, make sure you get the names of the people who will be coming in your contract. You should expect to pay 200 per person in the ensemble, plus any traveling fees and fees for any music that they have to buy special for your wedding. If possible, get them to put in your contract how many hours per week they meet to rehearse. A lot of ensembles will only meet once before your wedding to do a run through.

How do you get them to audition for you? I tried to meet with several people (including sterling) and only Counterpoint and one other group agreed to meet with me. Sterling said they can do everything over the phone. I could afford them anyway.

Well, you have to tell them you require an audition before you book them. Tell them you cannot possible hire someone you have not heard live. This should not be news to them. If they are truly professional musicians, then they will understand this completely. Just about EVERYTHING you do as a professional musician requires an audition, I don't know why wedding musicians think they're different. I always play for people live when they want me to play for their wedding. If they care about getting your business, which they SHOULD, then they certainly WILL audition. Even tell them you are willing to come sit in on a rehearsal, which they should be having every week, anyway. If they are not having a rehearsal every week, then something is not right.
