Lately, my dog has been waking up in the middle of the night and peeing on the carpet. I take him out before bed so it is not like he has to go. He never does it during the day.
Any suggestions on how to stop it? Is there stuff I can put on the carpet maybe? Does it sound like a medical issue?

Has he been going in the same place every time?

Re: Trouble with dog going on the carpet
You might want to stop giving him water after 6 pm. Also, does he sleep in bed with you or in another area? Maybe you can confine him to the bathroom/kitchen at night. If they have an area that they consider their own, they are less likely to go to the bathroom there. Or you might want to get a crate for him to sleep in at night.
Good luck!

Re: Trouble with dog going on the carpet
Thanks so much for your suggestions. I will def. start taking up the water after he eats dinner. He goes on the carpet in the living room-no where else. He sleeps in the bedroom with me on his own bed. I don't have a door, but I will devise a blockade starting tonight. Thanks again!
ETA: I will do the chair and the rug cleaner also. Thanks!

You may want to get a really good cleaner from the pet store and CLEAN the area where he's been going - it seems to me like he thinks he's supposed to go there because he has gone there before.

Re: Trouble with dog going on the carpet
I was just going through the same thing with my shih tzu. He would get up in the middle of the night and pee on the living room carpet in the same spot everynight. What we did and it ended up working, was we put a chair over the spot he goes to every night, and he stopped doing it when he realized he could not get to that spot anymore.

shih tzu's are hard to train, mine is still learning after a year old.
