between Variety and After Hours. What made the decision for you (if you used or are using one of the two)?
P.S., We're not going to use an emcee, just a dj.

Re: Trying to decide....
used Variety and loved everything about them.
i saw them at a bridal show and they did such a great job that it was a really easy decision for me. They also gave me a great price which helped

Re: Trying to decide....
we booked after hours, but we are having phil as the emcee. His price was in between two other quotes we got and the other companies (there wasn't a huge price difference). We mostly booked them because of phil's personality and the good feeling we got about working with him. hth

Re: Trying to decide....
the reviews for variety really sealed the deal for us. just figured there wouldnt be this many positive words said about them if they werent good. plus ray was a sweetheart and really worked on giving us the best price

Re: Trying to decide....
If we were using an emcee, After Hours would be our choice, hands down. Since we're not, I'm really more concerned with the dj himself.
We went to a show last night and one of the emcees was so annoying. When you're using an emcee, personality is a huge factor. In our case, I'm more confused because we're only looking at hiring a dj.
ETA: The emcee to whom I referred was not with either of the aforementioned DJ companies.

Re: Trying to decide....
yeah if i was only looking for a dj, phil's personality wouldn't have swayed me as much but i do think he is really nice to work with. you could always set up an appt or go to a showcase for both dj's. i'm not sure how often those are but phil had one last month. also phil has a lot of videos of different set ups (live musicians, emcee, etc) so maybe he could email you some videos of just a dj or if the file is too big i'm sure he'd throw it in the mail from you. he's really responsive to email/phone calls.
IMO you have two good companies with great reviews. I know that every wedding decision feels so important but i think you'll win either way you go.

Re: Trying to decide....
i used variety at my wedding 3 weeks ago
THEY WERE AMAZING!!! beyond amazing - I couldn't have been happier
danced all night - everyone danced all night
they were fantastic - and they were reasonably priced too ( i was on a tight budget)
I had up lighting too and it looked great
Sal was amazing!
i should add - i DID NOT want over the top annoying I asked them to make sure they weren't crazy. They were great - high energy, but not highly obnoxious LOL
