Tsunami---How Sad

Tsunami---How Sad

This tradegy has really moved me, it is so sad and the death numbers rise each day. I read today that Nate, the decorator from Oprah, and TP was there and lost his friend, but he survived.

This is just a horrible thing that has happened. And it could have been avoided too.

We found out about it on the 26th. My BIL mentioned it in conversation and turns out the people we were with had just invested a lot of money in building a hotel in Phuket. It's amazing how many people such a tragedy touches.

Not sure it could've been avoided though... How, SandraLynn?

The warning system could have been updated. I'm sure it would have saved some, but not all.

From what I read and heard, there is earthquake and tide readings and the people could have had 4 hours notice to 'get outta dodge' (this is what i have heard)....of course a alot of these people are poor and could they have escaped? But they might have been able to reach highter grounds. It is soo sad. The Tsunami could not be avoided, but the deaths could have been less if they used an emergency alert system ---

I get so upset everytime I hear about the timeline. The Tsunami took 6 hours to get to the furthest place that it hit, and no one had any warning! I cannot imagine the devastation.

One of my friends, who is in the airforce, was in Phuket in 2001. I looked at the postcard he sent me, which read, 'our hotel is right on the water.' It gave me such chills.

indeed..this is sad
now they have to worry about more stuff, desiease and what not... if the outbreak is not contained...the number can double from what i read...

they may never know cause so many are missing and unaccounted for.

This is truely horrifying! I can't believe the destruction and heartbreak they are facing, and now to have to worry about dissease! My heart goes out to them! So sad!

This is so unreal. Just reminds me how small we are in this make up of the universe.

When, I was on our HM we met a wonderful young girl who said, her home land is in Thailand. She said she will return there in a few more months, after . I now wonder about her

A co-worker just told me, that alot of the animals survived, because they felt it coming before it hit, they probaly went to higher grounds/hills etc. to survive. This is all too sad for the holidays. .

This is extremely sad, and it really sucks that nothing was done to prevent it.

I wish that there was something that we could do to help. In fact, I'm sure you all have received that FM recently... but (without naming names) I feel that that support should be done for the Tsunami damage instead. I'm not heartless, and agree it's a nice gesture, but I think at this point, we should focus on the tragedy, and support the other later.

I totally agree is there any donation or any thing we can do for the people in Thailand?

Not necessarily avoided, but the death toll would have most likely been a lot less if there was a warning---the Pacific Ocean has some type of device on the ocean floor to predict an earthquake of any sort--which apparantly saved many lives in Alaska and California b/c of this component. It detects in advance even if its just days when an earthquake will hit, and at least it gives forewarning to civilians.....

Unfortunatley the ocean floor of the Indian Ocean did not have one b/c the countries around it are not known to have earthquakes--so they never bothered--same for the Atlantic Ocean--I sure do hope that now the Atlantic and Indian Oceans have these things installed! B/c you never know and that is sooo freakin scary!

They say if there is an major earthquake in the Canary Islands (there's a big fault there, but it's 4,000 miles away) a tsunami could hit the whole eastern seaboard of USA (Maine through Florida! I cannot even imagine!

Forget it. I thought of that today too--if one was to hit the Atlantic, Long Island would literally not have a chance to blink--and its true from Florida thru Maine-----I't's f'n scary--Thanks Li, just another thing for me to keep me up at night in fear --- Terrorists, Tsnuami's---I just cant anymore!
