Turning on Heat/Electricity/Etc

OK..so how does this work when you move into a new place. The family is moving out of the Townhouse this weekend, and we arent set to close until APril 12th. So how do we go about turning everything on?

What day do you take possession? I don't think you should be responsible to pay until you close. But eventhough they are moving out you still have to keep the heat on so the pipes don't burst. You have to call LIPA and if you are in Suffolk County the SC Water Authority. Also you will need to find an oil company. We are using Meenan and are very happy. When you call they will turn it on the day you take possession and switch the account over to your name.

I agree - it should be based on the day you take possession, not the date of closing.

You shouldn't let the pipes sit without heat on, TOO MANY THINGS CAN HAPPEN!! I would worry about the furnace too, what type is it, how old is it, what kind of pilot does it have? If your utilities get shut off, do the companies have to come out and turn your major things back on?
I wouldn't let the utilities turn off without being turned back on. You are asking for problems. If they are still on, no one is there, leave the heat on 60-62, your utilities wont be crazy, they should be on for the date of the closing, or when the previous people turn them off.

OK you are all scaring me lol--I just thought they would turn the stuff off when they left. They are still going back and vforth to the house, slowly moving out, so I think I should be ok. I will ask the RE agent on Monday
