Tuxedo questions - 2 parter

FH and I went to Tuxedo Park yesterday to look at G-Men tuxes. I want to have them wear suspenders instead of a vest. The suspenders they provide as part of the rental are elastic (and look like they could be the waist-band to a pair of dirty mans underpants.) If I buy them all suspenders they need to be the clip on ones, not with a button, so its difficult to find (so they tell me).

Is anyone having their GM wear suspenders no vest, and what quality are they, and where did you go

Also, any feedback on tuxedo park (place next to Bridal reflections- carle place) would be great!

Hmm, i don't have any info on Tuxedo Park but I have heard great things about them. As far as suspenders though, FH wore them for our engagement shoot and we bought one pair at Kohl's and one pair at Macy's, they were clip on's. I also went to a suit warehouse called Karako's in Patchogue. The place was kind of weird but their prices on suspenders were pretty good!

We are getting our tuxedos from Bell Tuxedo on Bell Blvd. in Bayside and while I'm not doing suspenders, our friends that are getting married in 3 weeks is also using Bell Tuxedo and they are doing suspenders and no vests and I believe they are good quality clip on suspenders.

Here's some quick info for you that I hope helps a bit.

One of the requirements of a tuxedo is that the waist of the pants be covered. This function is performed by the vest or the cummerbund. They are not used to help keep the pants at the appropriate height.

Most decent suspenders will be, as you pointed out, for buttons. Are you sure the pants don't come with buttons? If the pants come with side adjusters already on the pants, then to be honest the guys probably won't even need suspenders. However, if you like the look of suspenders (as do I -- I have white Trafalgar suspenders for my formalwear), then I suppose the clip on kind are your only option. Unfortunately, I don't really have any recommendations for you for clip-on suspenders, but if you want me to look into it for you I can.

Getting back to waist coverings, tuxes need one. If you don't like the look of a vest, it's probably because everyone uses the incorrect vest. They use the high-cut 5 or 6 button vests that are really used for 3-piece business suits. A vest for a tuxedo needs to be a low-cut, formal vest. here is an example:

That vest WILL NOT be seen when the jacket is on. If you don't like the look of that, have them wear cummerbunds.

FM me if you want any more info. Happy to help if you need it.

Re: Tuxedo questions - 2 parter

We found the same issue with the suspenders so we just let it go and had the guys wear vests. They gave us the clip on suspenders anyway, but no one wore them. Tuxedo Park will be in my review . . . Maybe a B. They were professional to deal with before booking, but the day we went to have the guys measured it was extremely hectic and we weren't even sure they got everyone's measurements!! Not that it mattered, because there were size problems with most of the tuxes when they were picked up anyway. Also, they had said they would cut one of the ties down to a childs size for our rb and they completely forgot, so, the poor thing, he looked ridic the whole night running around with this HUGE tie, the knot was huge, and it was dangling out the bottom of his vest. We weren't thrilled with them. They were also expensive. That said, I think you would find a lot of these issues with most tux places and TP had a specific tux we were looking for, so we did go with them. I think the tuxes were nicer than most we've seen. They had grosgrain lapels and faille vests. Very nice. They also provide the valet service where they picked up the tuxes the next day from the Garden City Hotel, which was convenient. So, there you go - our pros and cons!

Not sure I would use them again if I had to re-do it.
