Are they being fined as a union, in addition to the workers being fined 2 days salary for 1 day of striking?

I am starting to feel less sympathetic with them...I Understand their frustration..but striking puts the entire city in danger, physically and finacially!!!
I hope it ends sooner rather than later!!!!!

I think it is one million a day for union and two days pay per worker..not 100%....

This is ridiculous! I am frustrated about so many things at work and so is my union, but we don't strike because we are teachers and are concerned about our students. We know that striking is not always the answer, because innocent people always suffer. It is a cruel way to achieve your goals.

I have so many issues with this, I could write a book. But, FH is in a union, one in which he is well compensated for, so I'm slightly conflicted.

this is correct. each striking workers loses the each day he or she does not show up from work, but an additional 2 days penalty for each day, so
1 day striking= 3 days unpaid.
my uncle works for the TA (though he is a supervisor not in the union and therefore not striking) and even he is conflicted. he also says that so are all of his guys. they don't really want to strike, but they see no alternative.
on another note, the MTA is one of the most secretive and disgusting organizations (IMHO) and I don't trust them with my money for 1 second. It does seem ridiculous that with a ONE BILLION DOLLAR surplus they are trying to cut benefits (one of the biggest draws to the normally lower than private paying civil service jobs) that to me is utterly ridiculous. I wonder if they are cutting their own pensions or health plans (the board of the MTA I mean)
