Ok let me preface this by saying that they have no concept of rental costs in decent areas.
When we had a 2 bedroom in a decent part of DC for $2100 they freaked out
Anyways, for the NY move, we need a broker since FH is in Ithaca and I am in DC. There was no way to Craigslist a no fee apartment with us living so far away. I have a lot of savings, and FH and I decided a broker was the best way to go.
So, since the place is a condo rental, there are hoops to jump through, etc. Obviously, we had first months rent and a security deposit. And broker fee.
They flipped out when he told them how much we had to put up front. Which is honesty less than we thought we would have to pony up by about $1000. I want to hit my head against a wall. If we want to move to NY, that is the price of doing business.
They just sent a series of crazy texts to him about how we are wasting money, bla bla bla. I told FH if they have a problem, they can take it up with me. I have a good amount of savings that I used to pay this. We have not asked them for money, so they need to chill out.
Ugh, they just make me so mad. They would rather we waste money on a crazy wedding, but not on a decent place to live

That stinks, I'm sorry lady. But it sounds like you guys are both aligned with what you need to do, and you're on the right path, so that's all that matters. But I know it's still hard to hear it when others give their unwanted opinions :/

It's just so frustrating
Especially since it was my money that paid for this...

don't let them stress you. Unless they're going to give you a home for you and FH to live in, they shouldn't worry about what you're doing.

Re: Ugh FMIL/FFIL vent
i dont blame you..its not THEIR MONEY its YOURS!! so it is none of their business on how much you spend...maybe your fh shouldnt tell them ever little detail and if they ask he can say something simple...

Re: Ugh FMIL/FFIL vent
I think they are mad because they helped FH out with a small amount of CC debt.
And it was my fault, his mom was just asking how much we had to put up front and I didn't think anything of it. But, I've been saying for months that I bet we pay $10,000 up front, and it was certainly less than that!

Re: Ugh FMIL/FFIL vent
i'm so sorry! its imperative that you have a nice and decent place to live after the wedding. where you choose to live and how much you spend on rent and everything else it will entail is your business and not theirs. if i knew they would react like this or have reacted like this in the past, i wouldn't have told them the price.

i don't really understand why they are all in your finances; it's really none of their business.

I never would have told them the price, either, had I known they would go crazy on FH!

Ugh, one thing I have learned is don't share details about how much things cost. Everyone has an opinion about how you should spend your money (especially parents). If they ask me how much anything costs, I try to be vague now.

Re: Ugh FMIL/FFIL vent
I wonder if we'll be crazy in-laws to our kids FH/FW's, it's like it's in the job description!!!!
I just keep telling myself that this will all be over soon. Can't imagine they'll be all in our business for long after the wedding!

Yeah- well my parents were like 'see, aren't you glad you saved money? That's the price of doing business in NY!' and his were like 'Ahhhh why are you spending so much money to move to NY???'
Do they think security deposits are $500 in NYC???

Wow. If they don't have a better suggestion then they should shut up! Did they offer an alternative? If not then I'd say to them if you don't have a better solution don't say anything about it.
