ugh - the holidays!!!

what to do what to do? so this is my last christmas/thanksgiving as a single (unmarried gal) w/thanksgiving coming up, i'm thinking, this is the last time we can get away with not splitting the holidays. on turkey day, we usually eat with our own families, and then chris will stop by for dessert. christmas usually does like this, b-fast at fil's, my parents house at 12 or so, then to my aunt & uncles house in st james.

so next year, what are we going to do?? my fmil seems to think that i will be at her house every holiday, not happening.

how do you guys plan on getting through the holidays???

i suggest alternating holidays and having some at your home....have to make it fair for both families and keep you sane as well! good luck

actually, christmas is easy b/c fh is italian so christmas eve is more the holiday then christmas day...so its not sooo bad, but thanksgiving is going to kill me

Re: ugh - the holidays!!!

well, for the past 3 years, we do both houses.

My mother cooks thanksgiving in Nesconset, so we eat with my family, then dessert at FI aunts house in Huntington.

For x-mas eve, my mother cooks a meal and we go to midnight mass. His family does nothing really.

For x-mas, we stop by my aunts in Hicksiville for an 1-2 hours, than go to FI's house for the rest of the night, dinner & dessert in Huntington.

Its tough, but its so important to us to see our families.

I am dreading this!

Right now we spend Thanksgiving, most of Xmas Eve and Easter separately. It is sad, but all of his family is on LI and alot of mine is upstate.

Once we are married he is getting Thanksgiving (his aunt is a chef and cooks, so I couldn't win that one!), and I'm getting Easter. Christmas is both families, and Xmas eve - we will probably alternate.

Splitting the Holidays s*cks - but at least I'll have FH with me (well he'll be DH then!)

We have it pretty easy, since FH doesn't have any family left he's with my family for all the holidays. But we have his daughter every other Thanksgiving and then she's with her mom Christmas Eve and with us on Christmas Day.

Re: ugh - the holidays!!!

Ever since we moved in together 4 years ago, we have not been splitting for holidays. I think we did that once for Thanksgiving and FH kept on calling me at my mom's house and wishing that we were together. So ever since that time we alternate all holidays except for Christmas. Christmas Eve is ALWAYS at my mom's (then we go to midnight mass and FH falls alseep stuffed) and the Christmas Day we head to his sisters in LI.

This is where i totally luck out - my FMIL doesnt like to cook - doesnt like to have groups of people and always picks up the hoildays she is a nurse ....SO we are always with my mom! never been a problem and never will be

i'm nervous about this too.

last year my FH came to thanksgiving (i was engaged for like two days!) and i'm dreading the decision this year.

it has always been a fight between us.... esp. cause it's an hour apart. i have no idea but i'm not bringing it up!

Re: ugh - the holidays!!!

sorry - we have been sharing the holidays for years now. we try to get to both families houses.
it is very stressful and we always end up running around like a chicken w/o a head - but we would not have it any other way. i love his family and he loves mine - we love to bounce from house to house. (plus you ALWAYS end up eating too much because every where you stop someone has to feed you AGAIN)

Re: ugh - the holidays!!!

holidays have always been split for us! This is how we do it!

Thanksgiving - FH & I spend it down in Hilton Head Island, SC with his family (family reunion)

Christmas Eve - FH's grandparents house

Christmas Day - My paren'ts house

Easter - We split dinner & dessert between the families & flip each year..

This year, we will be coming home from our HM the morning of Easter, so who knows what will happen!

I plan on hosting Christmas next year though to make it easier on all families!
