It could mean absolutely nothing more than you have a faulty service engine light.
I stupidly let my gas tank go really really low and it went on for the next few tanks, sometimes that happens. Look in your manual to check--it might have some suggestions.
Good luck!!

It usually has something to do with increased emissions (or something like that). The few times it happened in my car it was because I wasn't closing the gas cap tightly enough. It went away on its own eventually.

This happened to my dad too. He took it to the mechanic to discover that his gas cap was not closed tight enough.

Disconnect the battery wire from your car and leave it disconnected for 20 mins or so. Have somebody thats technical with the car do this (like a husband/friend/etc).
This reset's the car's computer. If its a serious problem that needs to be looked at... the check engine light will come back on.

any chance it's a VW? The engine light always comes on in those-for a variety of reasons! UGH! Good luck and be safe!

That just happened to me two weeks ago. I needed a new oxygen sensor (whatever that is!) It was kinda pricey, but I had other stuff done at the same time. I hope yours is nothing serious.

I had that happen a few times, and it turned out that I need to replace the Co2 sensor.
