Unemployment ??

Unemployment ??

Does anyone know if unemployment covers you when you move into a new state? For instance, I contributed to unemployment in NY for 7 years, and have only been in CT for 2 mos. If I get laid off, can I still collect unemployment?

*dont ask...suffice it to say no more internet companies for me I have just heard whispers in the hall, but since I am the last hired, I figured I had better be prepared.

I am pretty sure your previous employer would be contacted to verify employment and salary.

Good luck

Steph, thanks so much for posting the link. It talks about interstate claims, so that is helpful I will probably have to file through NY.

I am having a temporary pity party for myself, I cannot believe I took another job at an internet company and may get laid off AGAIN. the same thing happened to me 4 years ago, you think I would have learned.

As insult to injury, I dont even like the job. But I would like to keep it until I find another one My biggest concern is that I get something for unemployment, I was worried that I paid into it for 7 years in NY and might lose my benefits since I moved to CT.

look into the laws...I think in NY you have to work in the company for a certain amount of time 8-9 months?

DH used to work for an internet company in Westechester- so I feel your pain...but actually a lot of them have been going to a company in Stamford - maybe I could help connect you with someone?

Not necessarily. Unemployment usually looks at different dates, depending on when you file. I think most states will transfer wages from another state (I know Illinois will do this - the only state I have experience with, but you need to have some wages within the dates they are looking from the state that you are filing - but even if for some reason you have no wages in that state, you can still file in NY - they'll tell you what you need to do)
