I recently got laid off and will receive a severance package, Does any one know if I can collect unemeployment while I collect my severance???

My old job gave me a severance in one lump sum so I could collect unemployment. Our HR person said that if I got a check every month or bi-weekly it would be like i was still getting paid and unemployment wouldent cover me. When I went for Unemployment they asked me if and how I am getting my severance.

Yes, you can get both at the same time. I was laid off June 2003, received full pay and benefits until August, and then received my severance through mid- Nov 2003.
I also collected unemployment until Sept 2003 when I started my current job. It worked out really well bc I was getting paid from my new job and collecting severence at the same time for 2 months!
I was really bummed about being laid off but in hind sight it was the best thing that happened to me. I was able to save a lot of money, which is how we planned and paid for our wedding in 9 months.

K- I wanted to tell you I spoke to my mom and she said to tell you that YES, many of the people from A that got laid off are collecting unemployment with the severence pay. She said Call her if you need to ask any ?'s...she can see what they say ok?
