I just got engaged right after Christmas and I'm THRILLED obviously, but I'm a little worried about finding the right place!
My fiancee and I are both teachers, and I can't bear the idea of a summer wedding, even though it's our only downtime
So, I'm getting a head start now looking all over LI to book for October 2013 but the big problem....is, well, me!
I have been to so many beautiful, elegant weddings at hotels and catering halls complete with flowers, white linens, candles, the works. But it's just not me.
Does anyone have any suggestions for ceremony/reception halls that aren't the typical 'glass/mirror/flower/white' wedding?
So far, I've seen pictures of inside the Riviera in Massapequa, Douglaston Manor and Fox Hollow - they all seem like they could work to my aesthetic but are there more than 3 options out there for me??
Please help!

How do you feel about a venue that doesn't normally host weddings, but that you could bring in a caterer for? Like an art gallery, museum or theater? We're having our ceremony at the Patchogue Theater for the Performing Arts.

You are????? Thats so cool!!!!! How much are they charging you to use the facility? We looked into a few museums and parks etc, but it was going to be really expensive to bring everything in.

Another interesting venue you may want to try is Martha Clara Vineyards. They actually host wedding receptions in a barn on the family plot. It's very classy and VERY different with tons of character.

Thanks! I'm pretty obsessed with the idea too :) We're just doing the ceremony there, we're doing the reception at The Watermill. The theater is charging us less than we would have had to pay The Watermill to have our ceremony there!

Unique Venues with CHARACTER!
My fi and I wanted the same thing -- something that wasn't a typical catering hall (though many of those are GORGEOUS, of course). We looked at everything: catering halls, inns, vineyards, historic mansions. We quickly discovered that for something unusual, historic mansions or vineyards were the way to go. I'd be more than happy to go through the ones we looked at with you -- just FM me :)

Re: Unique Venues with CHARACTER!
I def agree to check out some vineyards....I'm not sure what your budget it, but many of the places that have been mentioned were outside of ours-and often too small as well! We ended up approaching venues that have never hosted wedding before- name,y, theaters- because we wanted something that spoke to us and our relationship. Turned out that the most beautiful theater west of the hamptons and east of queens was open to the idea, and we are super excited! The only ing is that we chose to do the reception at a traditional catering hall to cut back on the decisions we'd have to make (caterer, furniture rentals, linen rentals, etc). Is there anything that is an interest your fiancée and you share that could lead to something like that?
