I'm Jewish FH Catholic. His mom wants us to light a unity candle at the ceremony. Here is my question to those of you that have seen it or are doing it.
Do you have to get it in the stand with the smaller candles on the side. I really don't like those stands and don't think this is something I really want to display after the wedding.
Can I just do a really nice pillar candle and light the smaller candles right before we light the pillar. Do the smaller candles represent anything important that they need holders or special types of candles?

Re: Unity Candle
Thats fine. You dont need to get a whole candle stand...I sold mine at my garage sale cause I didn't want to display it as well.

Re: Unity Candle
We just picked up one nice pillar candle and a set of thin cancels. We are going to use candlesticks that we have and buy a candle plate for the pillar candle. That way we can use everything later as regular candles because we would not display the trio. Marshalls has some nice winter white candles in stock now.

Re: Unity Candle
This is my UC set. It is seperate, I don't like the full stands either, so I went with something like this. You could do whatever you want :)
The UC isn't a religious thing btw, wikipedia says 'The lighting of a unity candle was also performed at the wedding of Luke and Laura on the TV soap opera General Hospital in 1981, which almost certainly popularized the ritual to a national, if not international, audience.'
It was never apart of any religious ceremonies from way back, it was just started basically b/c of that soap opera haha now everyone does it . It is a beautiful addition to the ceremony, don't get me wrong, but most people think it has to do with religion and it doesn't.

Re: Unity Candle
I just read that as well that it is not a religious symbol but I will do it because we don't really want any religous statments made at the wedding and if his mom thinks its a catholic tradition I will do it to please her.
