We did one in our Catholic Ceremony. Our deacon suggested it!

Re: unity candle
Our church told us that it is looked down upon because it is not part of the catholic ceremony but we still had one. I don't think they can tell you that you can't have a unity candle.

Re: unity candle
I had a filipino ceremony that isn't part of a 'traditional' catholic ceremony either and there's a unity candle incorporated into it.

Yes, it's not part of the traditional marriage rite ceremony. we did not do one because we're really traditional. I have not seen it used personally but I know many do it, I guess it depends on the priest/deacon saying the mass.

Yep. Exactly this. You would be surprised how many things you often see are not part of the actual rite and its up to the local parish to determine what is and is not allowed. It's completely up to the pastor or in some cases the bishop of the diocese. I am a member of the church I am getting married in so I already know about what they allow and don't allow. Some places don't allow brides to have their shoulders uncovered, some don't allow petals down the aisle, etc. etc. The fact of the matter is for the most part, Catholic Churches are among the most permitting of these non-traditional elements compared to some other religions.
Don't stress yourself about it. In the grand scheme of things, you're going to be on such a high about just having been joined as husband and wife you won't even miss it!

Re: unity candle
I had one. Your church would have had a field day with me because not only did I have a unity candle I married an amazing Jewish man at my Roman Catholic Church. I think I was the roman catholic part of the ceremony.

Re: unity candle
we had a full mass and our priest asked us before hand if we wanted to have a unity candle. they set up a table for us and everything. but our church was pretty lenient
