I heard this somewhere, and I am probably doing it too. The mothers of the bride and groom light the tapers to signify their children as 2 people..then during the ceremony the bride and groom take the tapers and light the unity candle..signifying one. Some also blow out the tapers..and some keep them lit.

That's what we did. The candles were on a little table on the alter and when it was time to light them we took the side candles and light them from a chuch candle and then together we lit the larger candle.
