(UPDATE at bottom)NWR: Decisions, decisons...(warning: LONG)
So I need advice. I have been having trouble finding a permanent job in my field. There is a lot of freelance work available, but permanent jobs are offered solely by the City, County, or State, and we all know what great shape they are in. Most freelance work is in NYC. I did that for a while, and I was actually able to score some full-time temporary work for county and state agencies (maternity leave, etc) in my field, but it would always end, and I had to go back to freelancing. This didn't work for me. I need to have a permanent, steady paycheck, benefits, etc.
So I ended up getting a permanent job in August in a different field completely. It's local, a decent paycheck, full benefits. And I hate it. It's boring. I have no passion for it. There's not much growth. This is as good as it's gonna get. Secure but boorrrriinngggg.
In October, I got a letter from a City agency saying that they got my name from a civil service list for a test that I took two years ago (!) in my field. It was for a permanent position. Since it was in NYC, the base was pretty low, and I had just started my permanent job, I turned it down in order to give my new job a chance and also in the hopes for something better to come along.
In January, I really started regretting my decision to turn it down. I miss my field so much. It's so interesting. I love it. So my name remained on the list, and for the past few months, I've been hoping to get called again.
Fast forward to today. I got a call from a City agency saying that they got my name from that same list, and they are hiring for a contingent permanent position. She said that means that a few girls are going out on maternity leave, and if they come back, their replacements would have to leave. The girls have a maximum of four years for maternity leave. The woman who called me then added, 'But I have been here a long time, and I've seen girls go out on maternity before and never come back. Their replacements have been here for 20 years.' She asked if I was interested, and I said YESSSS lol
So the interview is Thursday. Now, here's my dilemma: At this point, planning a wedding, getting a mortgage, buying a house are all in the works. Is it a smart risk to take, to leave a secure job with salary and benefits (that I really don't like and don't care about) for a temporary job in my field (that I really miss and love) that has the potential to become permanent???? Keep in mind, if a permanent position within the agency does become available, they hire the temporary employees first, as opposed to pulling from the list.
If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading!!!
