UPDATE: ok....i need some serious advice here about a camera...

so we have 3 digital cameras ( i am not bragging...we just do...)

#1-is OK...it ALWAYS works, but it's slow and doesn't take great pics....it's like the $40 film camera you can get at target.

#2-is great....but goes in and out of working...takes awesome pics when it works though....but you can't rely on it...currently, it is stuck open and won't close (and yes, i've tried changing batteries)

#3-is really a video camera that can take stills...but they are as good as #1.....and it's not handy.

I've been wanting to get a new one that is reliable and great...but FH says no since we have 3...but he's the first to complain if the pics stink....so i offered up the idea of getting a really nice one as our wedding gift to each other...that way we have it for our HM....but he said that was dumb and that couples don't give one another gifts for the wedding (where he got that, i don't know)

soooooo......
my boss just gave me a secret cash 'bonus' for the holiday......should i secretly go get a new camera and save it for the HM??

TIA

UPDATE:

OK....I got the elph sd450....i glanced at the sd500....but then i was going to be pocketing a lot more of the cost and the main difference was megapixels (5 and 7). I am soooooo excited!!! Now I have to figure out who to claim bought it for us??? My mom is always a good scapegoat (she likes playing along)....althought my aunt/MOH might be a good candidate as well (she's big in picture taking....and is only getting us a small gift due to $$$...but FH doesn't know that) hmmm

IMO, if you have a camera you can't rely on, then you don't have a camera.

Precious moments can't be relived, take 'em with a reliable camera when you can!

I buy electronics all the time online c'su they have the best prices! Here's what I do. For a girl, I'm a total technophile and am proud of it! :D

1. Go to amazon.com and see the reviews. Sort by bestseller or best ratings.

2. Go to B&H photo, *** or some big store with lotsa cameras to see them in person, You have to feel the cameras and make sure u like how it feels in your hand.

3. Check out nextag.com or pricegrabber.com for price comparisons.

4. If you must buy it, make sure you get it online OR go to the retailers and ask them to price match! *** does it for me and B&H should too if they want your business.

Good luck! I got the Canon SD cameras are great!

HTH!

if you are looking for a point and shoot I would go for the cannon sd500 or 550.. both have good flash distances.. i have found that to be one of the important specs!..

we have the s500 (NOT SD) it is good, but not as good of flash distance, and it take the compact flash card.. sd cards are smaller and a little more pricy but worth it if you ask me... i got the s500 because we already had the canon G6 - wich also takes compact flash cards.. it is a great camera.. not digital SLR kinda like one... so a little more technical camera... anyway... i myself might even wind up buying the sd500 or sd550 soon... the s500 we have does not have as good a flash range, but our G6 does.. and i love that i can go to a wedding and take a pic in a dark reception all across the room and it comes out very good considering the conditions! and i can adjust the flash based on the conditions..

and i agree, if you can not count on your camer, you dont have one!

luckilly, the 'camcorder' takes an SD card that i bought from tigerdirect.com for peanuts (1GB!!) so this makes the decision easier.

i may still get the one repaired...but i want a new one!!! (and i'm getting it...i may have to fib about it's fruition, but i think the ends justify the means)

the real question is... how can I get MY boss to give me a bonus for the 'holiday' when the 'holiday' is Memorial Day? I don't even get a CHRISTMAS BONUS! Go, YOU!!!

I have a Canon PowerShot SD500 and I love it!

I would love a digital video camera for the honeymoon, but I don't know squat about those.
