Update on CJ - DONATION UPDATE AT BOTTOM

Original post by Dooodles

First I want to thank everyone on LIW for their love, concern and most of all support, not just during the past 3 weeks, but during the past 2 months.

Just to update you all, CJ is still very critical. Yesterday he was 3 weeks old. His lungs are VERY slowly improving and tomorrow the doctors will discuss a second round of steroid treatment. Last week my little love developed MRSA in his blood which is an infection which can be fatal in premature babies. His central lines were removed as well as the lines in his belly button as they can make him worse. Everything is day by day or more accurately, hour by hour. He is receiving antibiotics so please keep your fingers crossed.

CJ receives blood transfusions regularly so if anyone who is O+ and knows if their blood is CMV free - please let me know if you would like to donate blood for our son. If anyone is O+ and would like to have their blood screened, FM me for the information. Alexlynn7 happens to have CMV O+ blood and will be donating upon her return to NY.

I have been nervous to let you all know how he is doing as I am scared of jinxing him. He is holding well as of now, but we had an extremely rough week last week. And I know there will be so much more to come. As I said, life with preemies in the NICU can be up one minute and down the next. You literally take a step forward and get knocked back 3 steps at the same time.

I really thank each and every one of you who has contacted me with your love and support. Especially those who visited me in the hospital and have come to visit my little love in the NICU.
Smiley - for being with me the first time I laid eyes on my son!
Azad - for the numerous lunch hours and panicked calls where you rushed to be by my side.
KimberlyBride, LadyPrincess, d&d05, Ang&Rich: For all that you all have done and more - thank you!

ButterflyBride, DIJBH, Alexlynn7, IrishTracy, Trinity44, Sweatpea130000, Mindy0247, Ronkonkomonga, eogara, kdrainey, chichila15 and ravensbride - thank you for your love and support. And for all of you who have sent prayers and good wishes, please keep them up!

We thank you and love you all.

Donna and Chris

I did find out today that to specifically donate for CJ the cost is $135. And if he receives too many donations, they throw out the unused blood. If anyone can just go and donate at the center near Schneider's, at least they will have a healthy supply on hand! And then they will screen for CMV free blood.

Prayers for CJ and your family Donna!

I am B+, CMV- so I am not much help.

Here is some more info on CMV
for those that asked.

When I got my NY Blood Center donors card many years ago, it had my blood type and CMV status on it. So if you have one check it, you may never have noticed it. They test your blood after you donate (if this procedure hasn't changed over the years)

I was told today that it is free and if he can't use it they will not throw it away but give it to someone else that needs it. I am so mad now The $ isn't the problem but if it's going to be thrown out, that stinks

The only other solution would be to wait a few weeks since they received so many phone calls today for CJ. Everyone on LIW truly brought me to tears with the generous response to help my little love.

THANK YOU EVERYONE

I hope that he is able to get the necessary blood and that it makes it him strong enough to come home to you and Chris.

Ok..

Now this make sense.

I called today and they as soon as they had the case number they put me on hold. Came back to say they didn't need my blood. If I wanted to donate still I'd have to wait until May sometime.

I tried!

(PS they told me it would cost money, but how much)

EtA: PS, Hi doodles.. congrats on the baby, I don't think we've ever much posted to each other directly. As I mentioned before my twin bros were born premature (By 3 mths) so I know its tough. Hang in there!

Let me know when you need more blood. I gotta few pints to spare I actually feel sorta disappointed I couldnt help

I must have been under a rock, because I didn't know that you had posted. I'm glad to see that you're doing well, and happy to hear that CJ is a strong little guy.

I'm not sure what blood type I am, but I will find out, and see what I can do for you.
Sending your way some :
