UPDATED: Landlord found the stink!!!! What would you do if something died under your house?
It WAS a dead raccoon!!!! He was like sorry you had to live with that smell for so long! I really had no idea. I said, you're just lucky we were in the process of moving out when it happened. It was seriously the worst smell I have EVER smelled!!!
Luckily I am moving out on Sunday, but I was thinking.. If I owned this house how would I get this thing out? I know this is a funny question.
The other day around noon there was a raccoon on my back porch. He was missing a lot of hair and looked very sickly. I tried to scare him away and he just stared at me. Eventually he just walked away slowly and went under the fence.
I called the town who told me to call someone else and they were not answering so I forgot about it.
Well now my whole house stinks like the dump! Right next to the back porch is a very very small area where you can get under this house. I don't know WHY they built it this way. Its Just big enough for maybe a dog to get into.
I really think the raccoon went under my house and died. I have thrown away the potatoes and most things are moved out anyway. I poured bleach down my drain and have been running hot water in them. I ran my dishwasher and washing machine on hot with just soap etc.. I have explored every crack and crevice of this house to try to figure out if the smell is something else.. Well its not.
So anyway, back to my question. If something died under your house making it virtually not livable conditions (I've been sleeping over my moms and leaving all the windows and doors open over here etc, but now you can smell it outside too!
Anyway, like I said the entrance is VERY small to get under the house. What would you do!!!

Did you call the Health Dept. or Animal control?
I would start there!

MY gut reaction was 'MOVE!', but you are doing that anyway!
Since you rent, did you tell your landlord? Really it is his/her job to deal with it, especially since you are moving out.
If you owned, you'd have to call a wildlife removal service ( like an exterminator)

i think that is a good place to start. or tell your landlord. racoons can carry all sorts of diseases, in particular rabies. now i know that the only way rabies can be passed is thru a bite or some sort of blood contact, but i wouldnt take any chances. plus i think animal control keeps track of rabies and stuff.

I think yo should definitely call Animal Control and your landlord. It's his responsibility to pay I assume, but it's the county's responsibility to make sure that wildlife are dealt with properly, especialyl disease carrying ones -- those fumes can'tbe healthy for anyone.

Re: What would you do if something died under your house?
I had already called BOTH! My landlord hasnt gotten back to me and the #s, rabies hotline etc never even answered the phone.
There is no way a person can get under the house. The two holes on either side of the stoop is just too small. My landlord just built the new brick stoop and all I think is hes going to have to rip it out
Anthony went down into the basement which we dont use and he said it smells so much worse down there but he didnt see anything, but thats what he thinks it is too,
We live right on the lake and in front of woods and we have raccoons here daily. We are almost officially all out!!
And yes, I am staying in the area :)

that stoop has to be gone...it has to be removed. Call your landlord-leave him a message and tell him that you will have the stoop removed tomorrow to get it out. Then call a demolition or brick company and get them to the house for an estimate.
Girl, you cannot live this way. Your landlord has to do something.

Re: What would you do if something died under your house?
since it isnt your house you have no financial responsibility for having the racoon removed.... however i would leave a really strong message on the landlords answering machine saying you are calling the heath department ( he doesnt have to know they arent comming) and the stench has made it unbearable to be there - you are also calling the wildlife control and they will remove the dead animal even if they have to rip out the staircase. ( i bet that gets him to call you back )
i am sorry you have to go through this it definately isnt healthy to be around decaying flesh and the fumes arent good for you either.
i am glad you are out of the house - and that you had someplace to go.
personally if the landlord didnt fix it i would make a huge stink over it ( no pun intended)- probably call news 12 about the horrible conditions the landlord is making you live in and how noone from the county wants to be bothered. but that is me

It was about time! I can't believe he acted so 'sorry'. You called him to let him know.
