UPDATE.....I just did a really hard thing.....

Well, since my post I received the check in the mail and DH and I have decided what we are doing with this money.

We are buying office furniture! My dad was a businessman and very particular about his home office...he spent a lot of time there and a lot of time fixing it up. So...we are going to decorate ours in memory of him. We have a beautiful desk already picked out and are just deciding about the books shelves and some other things for the room.

I feel good about this decision and I think it will be a beautiful room due to his help!!

8/23 will be 4 years since my dad passed away. Since then I have received paperwork on different IRA's and accounts that I was the beneficiary on. The past 4 years have been so difficult that I haven't touched any of the accounts...and thankfully haven't needed any of the money.

Well with my DH and I buying our first home, I thought it was selfish of me to be sitting on this money....I never even found out how much was there.

So today I just sent in the first form to liquidate one of the IRA's. I did find out that it is a large amount of money but for some reason this is just so hard and I don't even want it. It was supposed to be for my dad's retirement

Thanks for listening

I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been. Somewhere, you're father is looking down and I'm sure he is proud of you for doing what you did.

So sorry that you have to go through this but I think that there is a positive side to this as well. Your dad wanted you to have this money and buy putting it into the purchase of your home you are letting his memory live on - every time you walk through the door you'll think of him. It was his way of taking care of you - so I think you should let him.

I went through some of the same when my mom passed away. It's hard but I had to think of it as 'she would want us (my sister and I) to use the money to do something good for ourselves'. I paid off my credit card bills and put the rest into an IRA and she used hers for her master's degree. Without that money we wouldn't have been able to do either.

I think that buying a new house is one of the most amazing things you can do with this money. Your dad left you this to ensure that you would be taken care of in life, which is what you are doing. How wonderful to be able to buy a home and be able to honor your dad by being able to hang his pictures all over your home. I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. It's such a difficult time. But, your dad would have wanted you to use it for your life and it seems you're making a really wise decision. I think he'd be proud and I'm sure he'd be happy that he was able to help you have a better life.

I went through this with my father but my mother said much of what the ladies here are saying so we used the money. He wanted you to have this and he wanted you to be successful. Imagine how proud he would be to know you own your own home. I am sure that was a dream of his for you. This is an investment and most likely where you will start your family (or will help you get your next home where you will start a family), should you choose to. Think of how he would react...I think he would only be happy for you in using this to buy a home, rather than something reckless or wasteful. You aren't being disrespectful, I think you are in some ways honoring him. Maybe at your new home you can put a memory garden it. I'm going to start crying. FM me if you would like.

Oh sweetie...
I still can't believe he's gone...he was such an amazing father, and he is looking down on you now, still being that amazing father by assisting with your new home.
