upset, dont know what to do about RD: warning, posted by vegan

FH and I have to pay for the RD. We don't have the money to go out with everyone. So we are doing it at his aunt and uncles house. We thought of maybe doing a tex mex, our wedding has alot of Italian food so we wanted something very different. Only thing is I don't know if it will pass with my father and his parents well. On top of that we have talked about having chicken there, but I was thinking about it and I don't know that I can bring myself to that. I am not at all trying to offend anyone, but we have our beliefs and I don't want my wedding, any part of that, to effect my beliefs. I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

As a vegetarian-- it was very important for me-- to have plenty of vegetarian fare at all of my weddign events-- However-- not everyone is happy and satisfied without meat..

You need to think of a way to throw the best party-- and think about what everyone will enjoy-- I really think you'll need to serve at least a little chicken.. or something else.

ETA- if you are really opposed to serving it-- make sure there is a lot of protien there in a meat eater friendly way. A lot of peopel are afraid of Tofu and Soy..

Alot of stuff has bean. I mean it is tex mex, beans work. It would be different if we weren't cooking. But to be going out and purchasing it, then cooking it, not only does it freak me out, but I wouldn't even know how.

I say have a lot of pasta. You might have some low/no-carb people there, but I'm sure they'll suck it up for one night. You could also try having some kind of really good meat-flavored tofu brought in. I think that if it's mixed in with other things, people might have a hard time telling the difference. Maybe you could get some 'meatballs'--I don't know if Morningstar makes something like this.

I don;t like to cook meat either-- but FH eats it-- so it is always his dept.. What about bringing in some chicken, etc.. I have done that before-- made all the veggoe stuff and just brought in the meat-

My mother at two sisters are vegetarian. My mom cooks with a lot of the Morningstar products. Try the veggie crumble, you can make a stir fry 'chop meat' with it. You can also make meat balls and stuff like that to be included in the tex-mex theme. If you saute it with some mexican spices it should be really good.

I am actually starting to look into Waldbaums catering. It is a lunch so.... I know it is a cop out, but the less work. That way we can get wraps or somethng like that and there can be meat ones. Actually I really like Panara Bread but they get expensive.

We did think of veggie chili, Kevin has a really good recipie. But the closer I get to this the less work I really want to do!

Have you considered Indian? My RD dinner will be at an Indian restaurant buffet style. There will be at least 2 meat entrees AND plenty of vegetarian dishes. (It is relatively inexpensive as well!)

I love Indian. Not sure about FHs parents or my dad. They are not very experimental.

My FI eats meat, chicken, duck you name it...I do not.....so I bought him Chicken Patties - vegetarian ones and didnt tell him they were not the 'real' thing and get this they are now his favourite thing to eat!!!

I am sure that will probably change when he reads the label and sees that they are a chicken substitute ...

I think there are lots of alternatives out there to the 'real' thing and if it really offends you then dont serve it...it is your RD after all and people need to respect your beliefs...you are not asking them to sit there with no food, just not what they would typically order themselves.

Good luck!

What about just providing the meat on the side? You can purchase the pre-packaged Perdue selects (their purpose I think is to throw onto Ceasar salads) so if someone wanted a chicken and bean burritto, they can just add the chicken! Or Shrimp (that would be easy). Little to no prep needed from you and you could keep the meat away from your food. Waldbaum's might be a good alternative too--I'd just be weary that they'd include things that aren't necessarily on the menu (ie you'd get your wraps in an egg wrap, if those exist). Good Luck!

Why can't you ask one of your friends/relatives to prepare a chicken/meat dish and bring it with them? That way you don't have to even buy it? I just think, as a meat eater myself (go ahead, throw tomatoes) that I would be pretty disappointed if there were no meat entrees. Actually, I would probably just as grossed out as you are by chicken if you told me that everything had tofu in it. I realize it's 'your day' so it is about you, but your guests needs are really important, especially if you want them to enjoy themselves.

Darcy, I understand what you are saying about not wanting to compromise your beliefs but you cant force them onto others.

You shoudl just refrain from eating anything non-vegan

You could also do the 6ft subs and have one thats totally vegetable...Even I eat those at parties...plus lots of salads and chips and your rd is set
