I have been looking for areas upstate that are not too bad a commute to the city by train and not too bad a commute by driving to Queens. So far, I've come up with Monroe in Orange County. Are there any other areas that are not too expensive areas with high property tax that are convenient for commuting? Like what part upstate does the Throgs Neck connect to? I have no sense of direction and am easily confused by maps. Anyone care to help me out and name some areas?

Re: Upstate Areas?
The Throgs Neck will put you in the Bronx.
Try Putnam and Westchester counties.

Re: Upstate Areas?
I am looking into Yorktown Heights. Does anyone know how the commute into the city is? Is there trains in that area?
I dont see YorkTown Heights listed. We live about a mile outside Orange County. I know for us we have whats called Park and Ride. You park your car and then take a shuttle/bus to the nearest train station to NYC. I'm a SAHM and DH works local so when we go to NYC we drive. But they may have the Park & Ride in Yorktown.

for me, yorktown is a trek into the city. i don't know what station you would have to drive to, however when my family lived in westchester (30 minutes from the city) it was another 30-40 minute drive to visit our friends in yorktown...
my friend just bought a place there, but both her and her husband commute to white plains, not the city...
i moved to chappaqua in westchester. I have a fairly easy comute to the city. Other areas that are affordable are mt kisco, ossining, briarcliff manor, mamaroneck, pleasantville. They all have trains that go to Grand Central- slightly smaller and nicer than penn imo.

Yorktown Heights is really kind of up there in northern Westchester. I live in Connecticut and once commuted to the city via Goldens Bridge train and that was an hour into Grand Central Station. I was really motivated. I left my house at 6:10 and was at my desk on 56th St at 8:50 - sometimes sooner or later - those darned metro north trains take forever some mornings in those tunnels leading to Grand Central!!! I guess you'd have to get the train either in Goldens Bridge or Mt. Kisco or some place like that.
I worked with a lot of people from Yorktown/Yorktown Heights. I guess it has really been up and coming because I never heard of it till around three years ago.
Have you thought about Southern Westchester. I used to work in Valhalla which I thought was a nice town - its about a 42 minute train ride into the city. Also Chappaqua and Pleasantville are very nice too. I know a lot of people I worked with said White Plains is really beautifying itself as well. But with all these places you probably won't get in anything in good condition under 500k.
My Uncle moved his family up to Monroe about 20 years ago into a large house (there were 7 kids). He and his wife liked it but they ended up moving back to Queens because the kids missed it so much. Talk about sacrafice. They went back to literally living on top of each other but sometimes I guess its more about the people than the place. Anyway I know they really liked Monroe.
I'm moving back to Long Island. Granted homes here are a lot more for your money but I'm tired of traveling everywhere. I can't even get a train here. Like above said, you're paying for the quality of life on LI.
