I went to a wedding upstate this weekend and I know its been said a million and one times but: Weddings are sooooo different outside of the LI/NYC area. I wouldn't even handle it--I'm almost embarassed for them to come to my wedding, they're going to think that I'm being excessive--but its just sooo different. The 'cocktail hour' if you want to call it that, was in the same room as the reception and consisted of a buffet table with veggies and dip. The 'open bar' was only open during cocktail hour-then closed, but reopen for dinner-then closed. They only allowed one bottle of wine on each table (but they told us we could have all the water we wanted)...hmmm..definetly interesting.

Re: upstate wedding
What part of upstate NY were you in? I went to college in central NY and I can imagine what you're talking about. For my friend's wedding in New Hampshire, the 'cocktail hour' was cheese cubes, crackers, and some kind of 'pate' from the supermarket. The 'open bar' was 5 kinds of bottled beer, one white wine, one red. And just like yours, it closed after the cocktail hour.

We were just at Jen and Dale's Wedding at Villas, what a feast!!!! The food was amazing, the service was awesome, just everything was great. They are going to be blown away when they go to your wedding.

Re: upstate wedding
the wedding was in Brewerton (the outskirts of Syracuse)! OMIGOSH! I was cracking up the whole night about the flowers!!! the centerpiece (and again I use the term loosely) was a square plastic vase with some horrible looking silk (purple) flowers smushed into a piece of styrofoam---and of course I won the stupid thing! I 'accidently' forgot it there though. They opted for the Party bus--which is cool...but it was a freaking Winnabego (sp?)!!!! I'm not kidding...and whenever the driver honked the horn it played going to the chapel. My Fi and I thought we fell threw some twisted rabbit hole!

Re: upstate wedding
I spent 4 years living about an hour east of Syracuse near Utica (arson capital of central NY) and if the everyday attire was any hint, I can only imagine what the weddings are like!

Re: upstate wedding
Ive been to a few weddings in the Rochester area - I know what you girls are saying! Lets just say jeans and sweaters!?!?!
3 of my BMs are from Rochester and I am worried that they are going to think I am rich or showing off or something when they come to my wedding!
I have a ton of other people coming from the suburban-Utica area, Syracuse, Buffalo....

Re: upstate wedding
But they still got married, right? They still love eachother and still want to spend forever together? Right? I hate to be a beotch, but I just think maybe on Long Island and in NYC, people tend to forget that it's not about the party, it's about the marriage. I totally hear what you're saying, and I've been to some similar weddings, but don't lose sight of what a wedding is really about.

Re: upstate wedding
I hear you about the upstate wedding, but I think that there are beautiful places to have it upstate that would do just as elegant a job as Long Island. I know when I was dating my college boyfriend we planned on getting married there at the chapel on campus and having the reception also in Ithaca. It would have been just as expensive and nice as ours here I am sure. Maybe this is just their taste, or what the budget would allow? I know there are lots of people on LI that have weddings at VFW halls and places like that, which sound like the equivalent of the upstate one you went to. That said, I know there are people on here having artificial flowers so I wouldn't try to make people feel bad about that...

Re: upstate wedding
Sorry to say that this thread seems petty...although the weddings out of state or upstate aren't as extravagent as ours in Long Island, it doesn't make them any less great. It's about the bride and groom getting married and enjoying their day...

Re: upstate wedding
Some of the most beautiful weddings I've been to were upstate.
Award for the most creative, hardest working Bride: Wedding which took place in Norwich, NY (an hour North of Binghamton).
Award for the BEST FOOD (and I DO mean best food, we had the groom from that wedding be our menu consultant): Wedding which took place in the Saratoga Springs area.
Award for the most comfortable, homey wedding: Wedding took place in Nedrow, NY, in the outskirts of Syracuse. That was a friend of FH's, and all his friends were making fun of the backyard setting. I told them off, that this was a beautiful wedding and that the Bride and Groom did the best they could. Not only that, I felt that this wedding was really a celebration of the B&G. I didn't know a soul there other than FH and some of his friends (I didn't even know the B&G), but I was more comfortable there than any other wedding I've ever been to.
Am I getting married on Long Island? Yes. Am I excited about how great my wedding is going to be? Yes. Do I wish that I was as creative as Amber, as culinary as Matt? YES.
ETA: My Matron of Honor got married outside of DC at a very exclusive country club. She had fake flowers because her MIL is very allergic to pollen. Her wedding was as nice as any that I've ever been to on Long Island. She grew up in Syracuse and went to college in Rochester.

Re: upstate wedding
StepherG, I totally agree with what motivated you to say what you did. In all honestly sometime I think that we here are the silly ones. We spend all of our $$$ on a day that most people only remember minute details of..unlike the weddings upstate who dont live under a magnifying glass and the brides probably dont get half as stressed as we do lol

Re: upstate wedding
I wasn't trying to be petty at all-and I apologize if anyone took it that way. It was my cousins wedding and I was soooooo happy for her and her DH they've been working towards getting married for a long long time. And I agree I have been to weddings on LI that were completly extravagant but I had felt that the bride and groom lost touch with what was important that day---that didn't happen at my cousins wedding. It was just the first time I've actually gone to a wedding out of this area and was suprised by it. If anyone takes offense, I apologize. I was in no way trying to tear down my cousins day or make it seem that I thought it was less important.

My comment was in general as well. I agree with Myasmom. Sometimes us LI Brides can be 'over the top' as my out of town friends say.

I wasnt trying to make people feel bad about anything, I was just shocked cause I never been to wedding that they used fake flowers everywhere... I do wish them luck and I am not saying all this stuff to be mean or anything, just surprised thats all.. I think maybe my friend didnt have anyone to help her plan it...
