Next weekend Im going to a wedding in upstate NY. I didnt know where they had registered so I emailed a mutual friend. He said they had not registered anywhere, but they could use knick- knacks. ???? I had planned to just give them a check, but it sounds like people will bring wrapped gifts to the wedding.
Has anyone gone to a wedding upstate? I did a search but there were posts that were a little old - from 2 years ago.
Has anyone had a more recent experience? Should I bring a gift (as opposed to $$)
any thoughts??? TIA

Re: Upstate weddings - question
I have been to several weddings upstate and have always brought a gift, however, if you are not sure what to buy just give a card and a check.

Re: Upstate weddings - question
I have not, but I would just give a check. Even if it's customary to bring a gift, I would think they would be happy to get a little money to bring on their HM or buy what they need.

i would do a check anyway....I mean who doesnt want a check?!?!?
If you want so you feel like you are giving them a gift..get a nice little bud vase or photo frame and wrap it along with a check that is what I would do

Yeah, where is it? I'm originally from upstate, and I don't know about the knick-knack thing, but registries aren't as big up there, I know that much.

Re: Upstate weddings - question
We went to a wedding in Albany last year and although some people brought gifts, there were an equal number with envelopes/checks.

First of all, LOVE your avatar picture. How HOT is he?!?!?!
Second of all, I would just give a check. Especially if they're not registered.... money is never a bad idea for a wedding gift! I'm going to a wedding at Mount Mohonk on July 1 (kind of upstate), and I'm giving $$).

Re: Upstate weddings - question
My friend si getting married near Albany. We were discussing the whole money/gift issue. For her, she really would rather money over gifts (Although she wasn't opposed t gifts). She had the mentality that what good it a toaster if you don't have a house to use it in.
I think it is more traditional to give a gift upstate, but I think either way the birde and groom will appreciate the thought.

Re: Upstate weddings - question
I am originally from upstate and have only lived here for 2 years. Weddings here are definately different from up there.
Money is accepted at a wedding anywhere. So are gift cards. Typically, you'd receive mainly gifts at an upstate wedding, then gift cards, then money rounding out the top 3. It is odd that they did not register.
If you do decide to get them a gift, it is proper to send it to the house before the wedding day. Although you'll see many people bringing gifts to the reception, Miss Manners would yell at them. The bride and groom aren't supposed to worry about the transport of gifts on their wedding day.
And there you have it! Good luck!

Re: Upstate weddings - question
I'm from Rochester and Buffalo and have been to so many weddings, I can't count them anymore.
Registries are a big thing up there as they are here, but not at the department stores, per se, but stores like BB&B, Target, etc.
It's really up to you and what you want to give as a gift. Don't think anything of it to bring a gift wrapped - I did this for a friend's wedding b/c she still needed her bath towels, so I bought what was left. Or you can give a gift card in any denomination to the and from any store you choose (they can order things off the web if a store isn't near them) or give them a card and check with whatever amount - just realize that if you are planning to cover the plate, it's not as pricey up there as it is down here!!

How about getting an American Express gift card and wrapping it in a box?

Re: Upstate weddings - question
I would definitely bring a check.. we can all use moeny. i would particularly bring a check if she is from LI or NYC where giving CASH is the norm... although she may be living up there now where weddings traiditions are a bit different and she might be expecting the check.
Or I've also done a gift off the registry + a cash gift. Make the cash gift and registry gift = what you want to give in total.
