I wanted to use my maiden name as my new middle name (thereby dropping my given middle name).
At the town clerk's office in Hempstead, where we went for our license, the clerk told me that I could not do this on the license and that I would need to go to court with a petition to change my name and pay a fee of around $200.
Well, today I went to Social Security and on the application, put my name as I want it to be Jennifer Maiden Name Married Name and they accepted it, no questions asked I've heard that once you have your Social Security card changed you can do everything else without a problem. So it looks like I don't have to bother with the court petition or fees. Just wanted to share since I know some of you are planning to do the same kind of name change

Re: Using Maiden Name as Middle Name -- how to do it
Can you use your maiden name as a second middle name? Thats what I am thinking of doing.

thanks for the info!
do you think you can do this even if you want to have it: first name, middle, maiden, new last?

Yeay Jen! I wish I had thought of that...but I was caught up on 'no, can't be done!'...LOL
That's a HUGE relief not having to change all your degrees and court stuff (yeah, that's legal jargon for ya!)

I think you could do it if you wanted to keep you middle name. In fact, it might be easier because you aren't deleting a name.
A friend of DH's (who changed her name but not for marriage) had suggested putting on the marriage license:
Jennifer Middle Name Last Name Married Name
with just a space between my old last name his last name rather than a hyphen. She seemed pretty convinced that you could do it that way.

I'm leaving the degrees as is but I think I still have to file something with the NY Bar since I have a new last name. I think all this did was save me some money and a trip to the court

wow that's great -i have to try this too --i was under the impression that you had to file for an actual name change (petition the court, get the name published in a newspaper, etc) to make it legal...

Me too! I made DH find out all about it for me since it was 'all his fault' that I *had* to change my name I really thought they'd give me a hard time when I handed them the application at SS -- but nope, smooth sailing!

after getting your ss card done - switch your passport - it's really easy to do and then you can bring the ss card and passport to the DMV. My sister went to the DMV and tried to have her maiden name be her middle name and they said she couldnt do it (she had brought her new ss card with her) - then she went back with her new passport and ss card and it was fine.

The woman at SS who was helping me told me to wait until I have my new card and then go and change everything else -- passport, DMV, etc. I'm sure with the SS card, it'll be fine
