Using people you know instead of going professional..

Using people you know instead of going professional..

Am I the only one who thinks this is such a bad idea?

I had to post this topic because I got screwed in a couple of areas.

I was going to use a friend of my aunt's (a well established photographer) but he gave me the runaround. I also was going to use a reverend who is a family friend, and she also flaked on me, and other little things.

Though you may spend a little more $$$$ my advice is to go professional all the way.

Sorry for the vent.

Sorry you've had to deal with so much stress. I definately agree that it is best to pay the price for a professional!

I agree, however, I guess some people get lucky, huh?

I agree - its bad to use those close to you because a lot of times you feel a little shy about saying anything negative to them ie I don't like this style that you are suggesting ... But on another side, if you find a good person you know to help you out it could mean less $$$ and an even better job because they go they extra mile because they care!!

Keisha I completely agree!! We used a close friend for photography (professional-has a studio and does weddings) for my dad's 50th b-day party and he ended up dancing sometimes and even drinking! HELLO!!! My mom had to tell him to get it together or he wasn't getting paid. He changed his tune really quick!!
We have had other situations not as bad as that one. I vowed to NEVER go with a family friend for anything!

I've actually had a good experience thus far with this. I guess you just have to know the person very well, and be prepared to treat it as a very business relationship. We are using a friend for video (actually a vendor on this site, and he's fabulous), and my engagement ring, and our wedding bands, along with a few gifts for bridal party members all came from close family friends in the jewelry business.

I'm hoping I won't live to regret any of it!

Misty, it sounds as if you're using professionals tho' not amateurs doing business on the side

i am using the priest which most of his family memebers used, and i am receiving caligraphy as a gift, which my sister also used. however, if you do not know other people who have used them, i think that it is a better idea to spend the money

I just remembered a GREAT experience I have had with a family friend doing business with me. The jeweler who did my e-ring and will do our bands has been nothing but the best. We will be going to him for all our jewelry.

I think often if you use relatives/friends to do they job, they seem to screw you over... So yes, its better to go with a professional

Couldn't agree more! I have a friend who is in a very poular wedding band and I opted not to use her and instead hired a DJ. Her price was amazing, but I didn't feel comfortable with the idea of someone doing me a favor (when it involves my wedding.)

i AGREE BUT IF YOU AR PAYING THE GOING RATE THEY SHOULD TREAT YOU LIKE A NEW PAYING CUSTIMER AND THEN EVEN BETTER B/C YOU KNOW SOMEONE, YOU WERE REFERED BY SOMEONE.

BUT I THINK YOU STILL HAVE TO TRY THE CONTACTS FIRST TO SEE IF THEY WILL GIVE YOU A BETTER DEAL AND BETTER QUAILITY B/C YOU ARE REFERRED.
SORRY ABOUT YOUR BAD EXPERIENCE.

I agree to go professional- sometimes personal relationships get in the way- its like when a friend is doing work on your house- and it takes much longer with much more aggravation- then to deal with someone you know- and if something goes wrong- it will cause bad feelings- stick with recommendations
