Vacation Notice/Time

Vacation Notice/Time

How much notice to a supervisor for desired days off for vacation is considered adequate, under normal circumstances???? Obviously the more advanced warning that can be given, the better .. however, what's considered fair warning, without cutting too close to the desired vacation days/dates???

And is it fair when a supervisor takes off all the most desirable days/dates??? (Some might say yes, because they're the supervisor, they've earned that right, while others might say no, because the supervisor should try to 'spread the wealth' of best days/dates off to keep employees happy).

I needed to take 3 consecutive weeks off for wedding/honeymoon and I gave 9 months notice.

I can understand the extra notice for special instances, like wedding/honeymoon .. but I'm asking about the normal type of week vacation, or couple days required for personal reasons.

Anyone care to comment on the second part of my post??? Regarding what's fair when it comes to supervisors and scheduling.

I think the longer the vacation the longer the notice should be.

For a personal day I try to give at least two days notice. For a week vacation I give about a month or so.

As for the second part of your question, I think it should be first come first served.
